At the end of this book i immediately went in search of the second one - i didn’t even know if there WAS a second one but i went looking for it. Imagine my disappointment when i find out that its being released at the end of July….I’m Impatient already! I WANT THE NEXT ONE!

There were quite a few things i loved about this book and these characters:
-The heroine is a mess. She is a thief and a word hoarder. She lives in a library(i’m jealous) but she doesn’t really have a “home”
- Magic + Books + big words + Sassy mouth + mythical beings = a GREAT TIME
- I really liked the concept of the Avicen. Beautiful, noble, super old feathery bird people.
- The stray human with a super destiny is pretty cool too.
- Drakharin - well...it’s not the first time i’ve come across dragon people but it's great seeing them in this light.
- I can’t wait to see how things work out with the ragtag motley crew that was created.
- Dorian and Jasper - *sighs* i have my fingers crossed for this relationship!
- Tanith needs to implode
-

What I didn’t like - there wasn’t much
- I wish Rowan would grow a set
- I don’t entirely agree with The Ala putting a human into the middle of the fray
- How does The Ala not know what's going to happen being a seer and all that
- so do we just leave the corpses of important people just laying there?!
- I want more back history on the oracle
- And what the heck happened to Echo that she ran away and NO ONE looked for her!!!
- What was echo’s given name! It never says!

I loved everything about The Girl at Midnight: The mystery, the romance, the adventure, plot, characters, places, magic, just EVERYTHING! <3 I would've finished the book in one day if I had the time!!

I know this book says there is sexual content in it, but there is not any! There's only kissing!

Fairly witty and an interesting new(-ish) supernatural system, but I had forgotten how annoying it is to read YA novels that center around love stories — especially love triangles. “I have to save the works so let me agonize over how hot this guy is” is so very silly. Please stop.
Otherwise, Echo was cute, Ivy adorable, the Ala was fascinating (I want to know more about her!), and the Dorian/ Jasper side story was entertaining. Caius was oh so tortured and handsome which is pretty dull to be honest but at least he wasn’t a huge jerk like some other YA male characters so there’s that.

I loved the maps, art museums and sesquipedalia, but all the lusty intrigue was way too much for me and the juvenile snark was incredibly tiresome.

Well, maybe it’s time the dreamers started calling the shots.

I was supposed to stick to high fantasy this month, but I couldn’t resist The Gilded Wolves when it came out, which was a historical fantasy, and then I pulled this off the shelf of the library sort of assuming it was high fantasy, but it’s actually more low/urban fantasy.

I don’t even care. It was fantastic.

There are bird people and dragon people. They hate each other. Neither is inherently bad. Both want the same thing. Members of each group have to band together in a quest around the world to find the mythical Firebird. Delicious.

Admittedly, there were times in this story where I wish the characterization would have been deeper or changes in the storyline were less abrupt. Perhaps there are some issues of craft in this book, but I find myself totally here for the story and its intelligent, witty heroine. The ending had me riveted and I’ll be picking up the second installment soon.

4.5 stars

I just reread this book and within the first few pages, I remembered why I enjoyed it so much when I first read it a year ago. I've seen a lot of reviewers comparing this book to other books, but since I haven't read any of them, I can't comment on any similarities.

The writing is so detailed and well-executed. I adore the amount of detail put into it: just enough that I can visualize things clearly, but not so much that the story drags. The dialogue is great, and I love Echo's sass throughout the book. There's some romance in the book, which wasn't that great for someone like me who doesn't like romance a lot, but it was far enough to the side that I could tolerate it.

I also LOVED the Lord of the Rings references riddled throughout the book. It always made me really happy.

Now that I'm reading this after the sequel came out, I'm so excited to read the sequel!
