I love a good plot twist that comes from left field but the way this was set up I was confused for majority of the book.
I seem to have a thing for mysteries that use the seedy side of celebrity as a backdrop, and Garrett turns her lens towards social media influencers with this (presumably?) stand-alone volume. Lena stopped talking to her half-sister Desiree two years ago. Doesn't mean she still didn't occasionally stalk her Instagram - which is how she found out she was partying in New York City for her 25th birthday. The New York Daily News told Lena her sister was dead, of a drug overdose - which Lena could almost believe except for the fact that the drug that did the deed was heroin. Desiree did booze and coke, she didn't touch heroin. Unless a whole lot changed in 2 years?
What follows is Lena digging into Desiree's death, making nice with the bubble-headed blonde that was her sister's BFF, the DJ who loved Desiree but they broke up anyway, and exactly what is their hip-hop mogul father hiding?
I liked this one quite a bit, although I wasn't totally enamored with the final whodunit reveal (it seemed kind of weak-sauce compared to other players in the book who, quite frankly, had more compelling motives) but Garret keeps things suitably twisty and turny and I inhaled the final 3/4 of this audiobook in record time.
(And yes, Lena says "shit-nuts" a fair amount but it didn't feel overly excessive to me? We all got a favorite swear y'all. What did bother me was that there never is any explanation of her nervous tic itchy left wrist...)

Desiree has an overdose of heorin a Bronx park. Her sister Lena sets out to prove it was murder. A DUI accident from 2 yrs ago plays into this story. The murderer is pretty unexpected.
4/5. I enjoyed this one, fairly strong narrative with a relatable main character.

I have so many questions…
WHY was Stuart the killer??? Literally NOTHING was explained? Why did Erina/Karma fake all this BS and continuously lie even after it was clear Lena liked her company. Was that last chapter REALLY all we were given as an explanation? Like cmon.
On the other hand, there were a couple of good plot twists that made my draw drop and I did connect with Lena somewhat and her desperation for answers about all aspects of her family.
Only giving 2.5-3 stars because I felt like no answers were given and it was a definite slow burn without wrapping everything up.

Not a bad book but to me it just had too much talk and not enough action in the plot.
