reads more like a treatment for the television show than a proper sharpe novel. everything is small in scope as if cornwell knows the budget of the potential adaptation, and would have been the sum total of about two chapters in one of the old books - but stretched out to the full length here. scratches an old itch, but definitely would not recommend to anyone new to sharpe.

Not the best Sharpe story but an enjoyable read, if somewhat predictable.

A weaker entry in the Sharpe series, riddled with errors and inconsistencies. Regardless, Sharpe entertains as always. Even if he is a little more bloodthirsty and invincible than usual.

Love Mrs. Sharpe in this.

Suffers from some canonical errors (though frankly they are minor and more a symptom of the canon as a whole becoming increasingly ambiguous), and it takes a while to get started. But ones Teresa arrives it transforms into a complete delight. It took Cornwell 40 years but he can kinda write women now! This one is for the shippers and people who like women in knee boots! Tragically no sex scenes but she spends the whole book being cathartically violent and he spends the whole book simping over how hardcore she is while occasionally begging her to calm down a little and that's just as good!

The 23rd Sharpe novel, and it reads a bit like the greatest hits of Richard Sharpe, back in the Peninsular War, in command of a dozen riflemen, achieving the impossible. It's more like the original ones, which is a good thing. But it is a reminder that the original Sharpe novels were never that great, and owe a tremendous debt to Sean Bean.

Also I'm pretty certain Bernard Cornwell didn't write this.
