I hear all the naysayers, but my thinking is this was a much-needed fairy tale in a s**tty time.

5/5
A good book to end the year with.
I loved it; it was lovely, inspiring, and full of wisdom.
One might see it as a self-help book. However, it is not just that. True, it is full of deep messages and philosophical thoughts that make you rethink life. I believe it is necessary from time to time to read something that brings you back to life and encourages reflection, rather than simply escaping reality in a fantasy world.

I don't really review books - often, its just a silent summary/categorization in my mind and that's it.

However, this particular book by Matt Haig- one of my fav authors, deals with a topic/question that I've been struggling (and failing to find a suitable answer) with lately : 'what if'? Thus, I wanted to capture what I felt and thought about after reading the book, before time eroded it. Onwards then...

Regardless of the life and experiences one has led/had - happy, gloomy, hard, forgettable, exciting, a mixed bunch - we have inevitably wondered if it would be better if we'd taken a different path, choice, partner, job, friend, hobby - you get the drift. Call it FOMO or simple regret but that feeling can drag you down - some more so than others.

Matt takes up this challenge in his latest book, through the story of Nora, a woman in her 30s struggling to clasp her world falling apart around her. In a mix of fantasy, philosophy, self-help and a bit of sci-fi, we see how regrets can weigh you down - literally, and the 'what if' can make life worse than death, which almost seems like a release.

As in nearly all of his books, Matt's struggle and triumph with mental health issues like depression and anxiety forms a key part of the resolution to Nora's dilemma. Although I'm no Nora and certainly not a depressive woman living in the UK, it was easy to slip into the questions and regrets she faces and with a little help, finds her way out.

This may very well be Matt's best book yet. I am still not done fully digesting the book and am certain that the themes that are tackled in the book will resonate with many, many people.

To end with one deceptively simple line from the book : 'It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see.'

Honestly kinda mid. A cool concept and some fun world building but it was just not that interesting and the ending was predictable, I wish the author did more with it.
