I loved this series a lot. With this final book in particular, my disbelief was not always suspended, and some plot points were not entirely satisfying, but it was always entertaining. This was also the most brilliant and thought-provoking of the series— brought up a lot of really great questions. Would love more peeks into the world after the era of When Villains Rise.

SpoilerWell it was a satisfying ending. I'm impressed that they actually managed to wrap everything up in one book. I didn't hate anything about this like book 2, but neither of the sequels lived up to the first book in terms of quality or enjoyment. The best thing is that Nita finally grew up and learned from her mistakes in book 2, and stopped being such a hypocrite. She and Kovit finally got to be the evil protagonists I wanted back in the first book.

I wasn't expecting Nita and Kovit to do a 180 and become perfect, law-abiding angels but I also wasn't expecting them to become sociopaths. I thought the plan was to free themselves of all the darkness and death. I'm not sure what Rebecca is expecting of her audience. Am I supposed to like Nita and Kovit? Does *she* like them? If so…*how*?

Nita's development was the biggest disappointment. In the first book, she's different from her mother. Nita gets upset when she kills a bunch of helpless Dacts and she can't bring herself to kill Fabricio. She's morally grey and you hope she'll turn out differently from her mother. You want this poor, abused girl to escape.

But by the third book, she's basically turned into her mother. It feels like she lost in the end. She didn't escape hell, she made it her permanent address and not just out of necessity - like keeping the black market in line - but because of a boy? Instead of ignoring her mom's murders, now she's going to ignore his? We're still doing the whole "out of sight, out of mind" shtick? That realization is just so disappointing.

Also, simply being aware that you're awful doesn't make you less awful. So if that's where she meant to take Kovit, I'm just not onboard. This justification wouldn't work in real life and I just can't bring myself to believe it in fiction, either.

Then there's the not-romance. I don't need romance but just…why set it up, why have multiple kiss scenes, and then backpedal and in such a weird way? They "don't know if they want romance" but like…what she describes is romance. Was this a weird attempt at including Aces?

I'm just not sure what happened here.

let me start by saying...NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! IT'S ONLY A TRILOGY!!!!
Now that is out of the way. Kudos to Schaeffer for this wonderful trilogy of the Monster's Market. Even though it's listed as a teen series, do not be afraid to jump in head first and read them. I look forward to more stories from her.

3.5

I reread the first 2 books in preparation for the finale and during my reread, I just fell out of interest with the story. I got tired of the characters (and when I say characters, I mean Nita) and the decisions they were making. I honestly just got bored and finished it so I can wrap up the series and have that closure.

I feel like this trilogy isn't sure where it's going. Someone said this story had characters that are truly morally gray because they're not just people making difficult decisions in difficult situations but do have their own moral compasses which do not necessarily align with the world's. I think this might hold true for Kovit, who holds his moral ground, but Nita's actions are all over the place yet she still feels like she can judge others.

Fue un poco lento y definitivamente es el peor de la trilogía, pero sigo amando la relación de Kovit y Nita.
