A wonderful narrative nonfiction work following and using the Crafts' story as a lens through which to experience the wild political climate and social viewpoints surrounding slavery and various approaches to abolition in the US (and beyond), set mostly during the years 1848-1852.

The book also addresses social norms applying to relations between genders, other gender-based expectations, and how free societies place powerful guardrails up in the form of expectations that largely inform our expectation and flavor of freedom.  Essentially,  it addresses what freedom is actually seen to mean in a given time and place.

The Crafts' personal story is quite amazing, and I felt it was well covered here.  Their individual characteristics allowed them to better define social and political flashpoints in the highly charged war of words,  ideas,  and brute force surrounding slavery, and the confusing mish-mash of elements attached to it. Their personal experiences address these in the North, the South,  Canada and Britain.

Very informative - their story brought this period to life for me.

Very engaging, I particularly appreciated the exploration of the diverse and competing strains of abolitionist thought and activism. Feels relevant to a lot of modern conflicts within the left. The focal story is also very moving and cinematic. The author leaves a lot to the imagination. The reader is encouraged to try to interpret and understand the motivations and inner lives of Crafts and their associates, reminding us that even things written in their own words represent a public image that they were compelled to create. While this book has some positive academic qualities in terms of it's careful accuracy, it manages to be a quick read because the story and characters are so compelling.
