So, another winner! Loved Millie! What a kind and beautiful and old soul type of young lady. I was rooting for her from the start. An arranged marriage, Millie fell in love immediately with the young Earl Fitzhugh. He is handsome and smart and I love with someone else. An elderly relative armrest betrothed to Millie passed away, so now he needed to step in. His heirdom needed money and now he is being forced into a marriage he didn’t want, but needed.
Millie makes a deal with him to be a wife in name only and then will let him go after several years.
She never shows that she is in love with him.
Great story - has all the angst you’d imagine… you just have to read it!

I could really feel the emotions of Millie come through which made me really enjoy the story. In the flashbacks especially, her being in love with him and him being oblivious and so focused on his own love for someone else. I could feel the emotion and felt so bad for her.
The arrangement of the marriage was a good addition, it was reasonable as a way for two young people to exist in an arranged marriage not of their choosing. Millie and Fitz were both well developed characters that had their flaws but were able to manage and overcome a bad relationship/situation. Normally, having so many flashbacks-or rather, having a separate story told in flashbacks-is hard to follow but this one was well done, well written.
One of the best things about the romance itself is that it is founded on friendship and a long time of knowing one another (on Fitz's part) that helps make it more believable and realistic. The worst is that Fitz doesn't truly understand love. He spends most of his life infatuated with a woman who could never be his, even before she married, and intended to take her as his mistress as soon as he could, only to realize that Millie has been there by his side the whole time and that he cares for her. It was a bit of a let down in that he is the hero but we expect more heroic actions from him.
I felt that the story was well written and most importantly that the emotions of Millie really jumped off the page. That was my favorite part of the book.

i had an itch and this story (with the sweet scent of raw angsty pining and unrequited love) was the scratch
Really enjoyed the unrequited love and angst but omg it ended so abruptly. Millie shouldn’t have accepted the guy so fast. Should have made him work for it.

I enjoyed this one, first historical I've really liked in a while. Marriage of convenience/friends-to-lovers/pining. Good characters, capable women, decent pacing, and I generally just like anything that breaks the mold.
Obligatory Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this from the author through First Reads. Opinions are my own.
This was an okay-enough romance. Nothing stand-out about it, but neither did it make me want to give up on it or pitch the thing across the room. A few complaints:
1.) I was less than thrilled with the jumping back and forth in time.
2.) I understand this was one of a trilogy, but the pimping of the other books in the series was distracting and annoying. There were two side romances that did nothing to advance the primary plot and served only to confuse the hell out of me. Naturally, the idea is that you'll be so intrigued by these side romances that you'll buy the other books in the series.
3.) The sex scenes were kinda...blah. Supposedly, the romance and sexual tension has been building between the couple for 8 years. You'd have thought there's be more fire, more passion. There was not. I expected much more.
Nothing exceptional about the book, but as a fluff read in between more "serious" books, it was a fine diversion.
