I have mixed feelings for this one. On the one hand, I don’t feel the connection with the main character that I had in the first two books. On the other hand, revisiting the timeline from book two from a different perspective is smart. Very smary. It deepens the experience of missing out on information that the astronauts in (and readers of) book 2 experienced as well. In the end: good, but not my favourite in the series.

I think this was my least favourite of the series to date - at times it dragged a little, and overall it felt overly long. It also took me longer to get into Nicole's narrative voice than Elma's - not because she's unlikeable (she's very real, tough as old boots - in a good way, and her ever so slightly unreliable narration was fantastically done), but her level of cynicism is something to behold. But Mary Robinette Kowal's excellent writing and obviously thorough research still made The Relentless Moon a great read. Things I love about this series, and continued to love in this installment: the brill secondary characters, the historical Easter eggs (Armstrong and Aldrin!), the realistic portrayal of longstanding and solid marriages, the lady astronauts themselves etc. etc.

Well researched, fast plotted Alternate History along with complex characters and explorations of the intersectionality of societal issues? Sign me up!

I read this 544 page book in one day and am feeling a sad sense of loss that only a fantastic book brings. When I read the first book I assumed it would get a Hugo (it did, and then some). I'm even more sure this one will as well.
