unfortunately, this fugly cover does such a disservice to this book. just last night is NOT a light, fluffy rom-com. it is a story about grief, friendship, and reconciling with the fact that your loved ones may not be who you thought they were.

i read this because of haley pham, and i enjoyed it for the most part. i was mostly intrigued by her, as well as a majority of reviewers', description of this book as a women's fiction centered around grief. that is certainly the driving force of this story, but it's not too dark or heavy. there is a lot of humor imbued in this book, albeit it is british humor so i was constantly looking up british slang/colloquialisms, which unfortunately removed me from the story quite a bit.

i enjoyed the love interests, but i thought their romantic timeline wasn't well developed. i wish we saw them interact more earlier on in the book rather than starting their story well over the 50% mark 😭. as a general note, i wish everything was more fleshed out—the ending felt very rushed and incohesive.

i still had a fun time, but i probably won't think about this book again.

Generally, my thoughts were:

1. The big spoiler is what makes this book a good read. It's not pleasant, but it's very engaging.
2. Aside from the spoiler, I was not that interested in the book.
3. The main friends are all flawed. In particular, they are unnecessarily mean to Hester, but Hester isn't that likeable either. Finlay was good, but he was also pretty mean at times.
4. I'm glad what I thought was going to happen at the beginning of the book didn't.
5. The chapters looking for Finlay's dad were actually quite boring.
6. I would have liked for Eve to have read Sophie's diaries. It's a book, and would have been interesting.
7. This book is a very easy read, and I did enjoy most of it.

Things I liked about the book:
- This book didn't go the way I expected it to go. Firstly, I kind of expected a friends to lovers. Then it became increasingly obvious that Ed was a douche, especially regarding his "feelings" for Eve. So when he ended up not being the main romantic interest, I was really glad.
- Fourth Wall Breaking in the most hilarious way somewhere in the middle of the book
- How Eve's grief over Suzie was handled

Things I didn't like:
- The trip to Scotland.... It just felt so forced and ridiculous

I went into this book thinking I'll read a rom-com but I was pleasantly surprised by this book! Such a good story which deals with complexities of adulthood and how as we grow we keep leaving experiences and people behind all the while making new memories and making new bonds. It emphasizes the important of gratitude for the life that we have and the people in our lives our loved ones. The first half of the book reads like a contemporary fiction the second half is what you can call more of a romance book. The book deals with grief of losing a loved one and it handles in commendable manner. Although I would say the romance is subtle and mature at the same time heart touching...
