Very emotional - I cried multiple times during this book. Highly recommend, though!
I LOVED the premise of this book, and the look at lives we don’t often see in fiction about this period. The through line of sewing and stitching was beautifully done. Craft wise, it wasn’t quite there for me—the POV switched around in a slightly confusing way and the pacing of the book was a little inconsistent; I felt the main plot lines got resolved too quickly and neatly. But still an enjoyable read!

This was an extraordinary read. A runaway slave and a Jew join the confederate army, and form a strong bond that begins with their mutual love of music. Their army experiences during the war will leave them with nightmares, however, what happens after the war is over, will take you on a roller coaster ride.

I’m going to need to let this one settle a bit. The intertwining stories were both well-told, interesting and compelling, but it was a bit tooo neat, I think. I’m glad I read it, but not sure I can recommend it fully.
The Thread Collectors is a unique collaboration—a debut novel for New Orleans-born Shaunna Edwards, collaborating with accomplished historical fiction author Alyson Richman. Though they come at the story from two ends and meet in the middle, the book never seems choppy. Both writers do a great job keeping the tension on high, creating empathy, and putting the reader into the shoes of multiple characters—no easy feat. Plenty of historical details without overwhelming the reader, beautiful language evocative of the time and places. And I’m a sucker for strong female characters—not just main characters Stella and Lily, but a supporting cast of some in very different circumstances who share important common bonds. Highly recommended.
Good historic fiction that seems well- researched without having to tell every minute detail.
