It’s a clever world that I’m excited to learn more about. The character really grows on you but the romance isn’t super believable and it can be difficult to get through purposely obscure world building hints in a slow first three-quarters.

I really enjoyed this. I love it when an author takes a traditional idea and turns it upside down. This was my first Jasper Fforde book, but it won't be my last...

Great ffun! About halfway through I realized that the complexity had reached the point where there would have to be sequels. But this volume wraps up its own story nicely, leaving a solid platform ffor the next one. The world Fforde has built seems playful and made-up-as-he-went, but as the book develops everything ffits together nicely. New infformation is revealed at just the right pace, and everything unffolds as you retroactively realize it had to. Some may ffind it a bit too weird, but under it all is a solid plot. Jasper Fforde is a heckuva storyteller.

An interesting concept and impressive world building, classic Jasper Fforde vibes. I do think it was longer than needed and it took until the last 3rd for me to get gripped on the plot but that made up for it a bit. Still lots of unanswered questions which maybe the second book will help with?
