Joan is the goat. Most of my favorites are in slouching toward Bethlehem though. The 60s brought out the best in her writing.

Thoroughly enjoyed this collection of essays. Made me think I should really subscribe to a magazine... Or a substack at least. 
It was really refreshing to read pieces written in the 1960s/1970s who mentions how that time is affecting them and their reporting. 
Would absolutely read lots more by her!

the first half of the book was really great. unfortunately the last half was a bit strenuous to get through. i did really love ‘in bed’! migraine sufferers unite!

I’d read some of the essays in high school but glad I eventually went back and read the whole collection. Crazy how she can write about Bogota and orchids and the Ritz Carlton and migraines with most distinct, razor sharp commentary. I crave her self-assuredness.

A good collection of essays from this icon of 60s and 70s (and 80s?) non-fiction. Occasionally gets a bit too self-indulgent, but that's the writer.
