Beautiful poetry, I look forward to revisiting when I myself am a wife & a mother.
I have waited for this book for so long - since I started writing poetry, the summer I didn’t get anything I wanted, and everything that came after it, that made me forget how just a few simple lines could snare something into focus.
To see that yes, you can be a mother and a writer, can use words to give these feelings weight and heft.
I may not finish Nanowrimo this year, but Kate Baer got me back behind the desk, to remember what it feels like to tap into that. I wanted to sink into this book, in low lighting, beneath a blanket, like I would with any kind of special treat in my old, old apartment.
I didn’t get to read it that way, of course, because it’s the night before I go back to work after leave, and my ankle still needs icing, and a serious matter needed to be discussed, and isn’t that the way it is.

Absolutely beautiful. I got it in the mail on release day and finished it in one sitting. The poems are so lovely and several brought tears to my eyes. I recommend it to every woman! It’s truly lovely and I can’t wait to read it again.
Wow. I enjoyed this book of poems more and more as I went. I chose this book to review because I wanted to go outside of my comfort zone. I've been saying to myself these past couple of years that I want to read some poetry, but I never do. Part of my apprehension about picking up some poetry is that I don't really know how to read it. The last time I made an attempt was in AP English in high school (20 years ago!). The more I read, the more those apprehensions slipped away. I think this book of poems is geared towards someone near my age and stage in life. There are poems of singledom, then marriage and finally, motherhood.
The poems that stuck out to me the most were:
Back To School Shopping
Stronger Than You Know
What Mothers Say
For My Daughter on a Bad Day
Kate Baer did a great job of weaving her way through the nuance of what it takes to be a mother in today's crazy world. If you are looking at this genre and aren't sure what to pick, I think this would make a great choice for you to get your feet wet.
Thank you so much to Harper Perennial for the opportunity to read and provide an honest review!

"I got engaged when I was eighteen to a boy I would never marry. I loved him more than anyone has ever loved, and still I cut him open, held his heart to his throat. (When I am buried, tell him that the only thing I meant to do was live.)"
