As a huge Austen and P&P fan, I was intrigued when I saw this title, but I wasn't disappointed! As someone who is an introvert, it was a breath of fresh air hearing Mary's story and understanding what the character went through. Learning more about other side characters such as the Collins's and the Gardner's was also enlightening. This is a great read for anyone who wants to look behind the mask Austen provided of the beautiful people and explore the beauty within.

I would give the beginning of the book a 4 & the end a 2.

I was delighted to be back in the P&P universe and was absolutely tickled by suitor #1 + Mr. Collins as well as Mary’s relationship with Charlotte. So many fans have wondered why Mary didn’t end up with Mr. Collins, and Hadlow delivered a funny, thoughtful narrative.

Once the plot deviated far beyond the original confines of the book, all I could think was: Get a job, girl!!

Yes, P&P is all about class and rankings, but for the last quarter of the book I was ready for the book to end, or for Mary to throw societal expectations out the window and give us a romp of an ending.

“There is nothing a woman is allowed to do except wait,” sums up the last quarter of the book (432).

Great alternate/addition to the Jane Austen world! I love getting the back story to Mary and also watching her grow and find her own place in her world behind her her 2 older sisters. I also saw this is coming out as a mini-series/show on a streaming service and I’m really excited to check it out!
