I really enjoyed this up until the last section, which felt like it was pushing feminism a little too hard to be believable in that time. Clean, but there is some pining for a man. 15+, but has to have read P&P first to understand the story.

While I appreciate the writing style fits in convincingly with Austen, this book was far too long and too slow a build. In my opinion a case of “telling” instead of “showing” that bumped this book below a 4 for me.

As a fan of Lizzy & Jane, I found the relationship between the sisters/Charlotte and Mary to be disappointing, but not completely hard to believe which I think added depth to Mary’s plight. The real gem is the budding relationship between Mary & Tom - a very sweet pair that I think deserved a bigger finish than what they got.

I think it's enjoyable if you're a Pride and Prejudice fan, but it's just very long. It started as a 4 star, then as it went on and on and on it just dropped to a meh.

95 CHAPTERS. Far too long.

"It is a sad fact of life that if a young woman is unlucky enough to come into the world without expectations, she had better do all she can to ensure she is born beautiful."

The book could have move right to chapter 60 after that first paragraph and I would have been fine.
Is it a great book? Meh
Did I enjoy it and relate to Mary Bennet? Yes, mostly.

I will admit that Pride and Prejudice retellings are not my thing. But I really wanted to like this book, and I loved the premise of following Mary on her own journey.

Brilliant first novel! The story captured me from the very first page. I usually prefer stories that have less plot and are more character driven, but this book had both. I could hardly put it down! Though I was a tiny bit disappointed at the way the story unfolded at the end, it was not the ending itself that bothered me. I think it seemed a little rushed to me somehow. Otherwise, I loved it wholeheartedly. I think any reader would enjoy it, even if you haven’t read or loved Pride & Prejudice. Pride & Prejudice is my favorite Jane Austen novel, so this book was such a delicious treat. Highly satisfying in all ways!
