Brilliant first novel! The story captured me from the very first page. I usually prefer stories that have less plot and are more character driven, but this book had both. I could hardly put it down! Though I was a tiny bit disappointed at the way the story unfolded at the end, it was not the ending itself that bothered me. I think it seemed a little rushed to me somehow. Otherwise, I loved it wholeheartedly. I think any reader would enjoy it, even if you haven’t read or loved Pride & Prejudice. Pride & Prejudice is my favorite Jane Austen novel, so this book was such a delicious treat. Highly satisfying in all ways!

I honestly loved this read. It flowed so well from Pride and Prejudice and the author clearly has great love for the original. My view of Mary has completely changed. I loved her growth and am so happy that this overlooked and unloved sister found her happiness and grew into herself.

Ah, regency era, where societal politness and self doubt are the foundations upon which the miscommunication trope was built. Janice Hadlow does a great job of recreating the speech, thought pattern, and mood of Austen characters. Although the pacing of this book was very slow, it was easy to drop back on each time and fully feel the hurtful emotions of Mary's family, and the joy when she finally was able to discover herself. How can you expect someone to love you, when you don't love yourself?
I highly enjoyed this book which is why I rated it so high! I was happy to return to these characters. The author did a great job of mimicking the writing style and tone of Austen. The book at times was slow and cheesy (the ending felt slightly rushed) but that didn't deter me from enjoying it. It was lovely to see Mary get her happiness

p&p fanfics will forever have a hold on me i fear and as a jane austen girly, this was always going to be an automatic 3 stars or above.
mary’s characterisation made sense, especially in her position within the bennet family. seeing her blossom in their absence was rewarding.
while the deeper insight into mr. collins later in the story interested me, it felt like it was at the expense of charlotte’s character development, particularly when she once shared such a genuine and kind relationship with mary.
in general, i had higher hopes for the exploration of the other female characters in this story, but i’m still glad that mary got the happy ending she deserved. as always, the gardeners are the true mvps.
