Absolutely heart-wrenching. I was on the edge of my seat until the very last page. Much recommended.

I think in terms of YA dystopians, this book is one of the best. The writing, characters, idea and world building is some of the best in YA. You can tell this is an earlier/older YA, because now the writing would’ve put it firmly in middle grade. Most YAs written from 2015-2020, were written for the mid 20-mid 30 year old women still reading YA because adult scifi and fantasy didn’t have books we could identify with. Ones written before, feel a lot younger. After reading a lot of YA and a lot of YA dystopians, most of the beats were familiar and nothing felt really new. But I’m still happy to have read it and get it off my long standing TBR.

This was my second attempt at finishing this final part of the trilogy and I’m glad I have managed it this time.
I hate war, I hate conflict and that is all this is, fighting and one skirmish after another leading to an inevitable confrontation. Bravery on all sides yet unmatched by that of the two horses Acorn and my personal favourite Angharad (“boy colt!”) who was by far the best character

”To say you have no choice is to release yourself from responsibility and that’s not how a person with integrity acts.”

Read the first book. Watch the movie. And call it a day!

I love the first book in this series and after watching the movie I thought it had done the series dirty… but after reading book 2 and 3 I see why they wrapped it up in one movie.

Patrick Ness has a fantastic writing style but he made the universe too big, which left the characters feeling flat (and kinda unlikeable to be honest). I wasn’t really rooting for anyone by the end and felt frustrated throughout.

This book - and the entire series itself - took me an emotional rollercoaster about the effect of power and how one chooses to wield it, the ugliness of war, what makes a man, love, loss, grief, family, culture and language and how important it is not to lose them or let them be lost, the extreme effect of misogyny, and respect and I loved every second of it.

Thought the end with the Mayor was a bit odd as he suddenly switched, but I suppose that could be read as him knowing there was no way he could win. Anyway, I fully recommend this series.

///ESPAÑOL///
Okey. Okey okey okey. Okey.

BEN.
No sé.

Voy a extrañar muchísimo a Todd y a Viola. Tanto que ya me duele.

///ENGLISH///
Okay. Okay okay okay. Okay. I’ve got a lot of things to say.

A big part of the book is, actually, all the same. War is among us and we have no idea what to do. Alliances and everything’s a mess and all that.

Mayor Prentiss and Mistress Coyle are the best. Villains. Ever. And yes, I count Coyle as a villain. We can discuss that if you want. Anyways. Manipulative. I hate when they are manipulative but I LOVE when they are. All the war they have upon their shoulders and how they carry on with it even when supposedly there’s peace. It was obvious that New World couldn’t have handled both of them alive, but I never thought that Coyle would be a bitch and be a bomb. But now that I think about it, it makes sense. Half of the words in this trilogy were different variations of the word “boom”.
The Answer’s people. Wilf, bloody Wilf that somehow manages to keep away all trouble and stays alive and I love him. I love how he talks and I love how he is just a simple soul that wants a quiet life. I love Lee, who assumed that his family is dead and fights to avenge them. Lee who becomes blind, but even then he makes Viola think that everything’s ok, that he’s alright, can walk alone and *everything’s fine*.
Bradley and Simone, who just landed and are on the middle of the war and who did the best they could to adapt. Bradley had to get used to Noise, something that broke my heart because he just wanted to be alone and the only thing that happened was that everyone heard him cursing. And Simone, who I didn’t really like that much (not as much as Bradley) because she was with Coyle, who ends up dead.
Todd and Viola. God, I’m going to say a million times that I love them. I don’t know what else to say about them. I love how they are when they are around each other, how much they love each other. (I’m gonna say each other a lot ok?) They are ready to do anything for each other (literally anything). They are the only thing they have in the world and somehow they manage to keep going even when they don’t really see each other personally for longs periods of time, with illnesses and a lot of people that wants them to be separated, because they know how strong they are when they are together. I’m a hundred percent sure that these two ended becoming leaders of the New World.
BEN. BLOODY BEN THAT SEEMS TO ME IMMORTAL. FOR GOD’S SAKEEEEEEEE HE’S GONNA KILL ME. Actually, when the Spackle said they had a half-dead Clearing that knew things about Prentiss, I hoped it would be Davy. I’ve said it in the last review but I loved Davy in the second book and it really broke my heart when he died, even more in a way so similar to Manchee. But seeing Ben made me really happy, too, because I Thought he was deader than Davy. And how happy it made Todd and Viola to see him broke my soul. Plus, I really liked that he came back with a new kind of Noise, hald- Spackle and half-normal. Incredible.
The Spackle or, best said, the Sky and 1017. Or the Sky and the Sky. You know what I’m talking about. I loved them, but I have to say that 1017’s POV where quite slow. But I thought it wasn’t a waste of time getting to know him better, and this showed more clearly when he killed Todd thinking he was the mayor and he didn’t know what to do and he was completely ready for Viola to kill him. I don’t know. It was different.

The deaths, because that’s what we like the most.
Acorn oh my god oh my god oh my god Acorn who was the last thing left of Davy and he died a horrible death. Bradley was great when he stayed with him.
Coyle and Simone, of whom I talked before but I’m gonna say it again: bitches.
MAYOR PRENTISS. The only thing 2.5 was for was inform us that there were this fishes by the ocean. But I liked the way in which Prentiss died, and I liked that he didn’t let Todd kill him.
TODD. Todd Todd Todd Todd. TODD, OK? TODD. HE WAS HUGGING VIOLA AND ALL OF A SUDDEN HE WAS A CORPSE ON THE GROUND. ALL BECAUSE OF 1017. I cried and I cried and I cried. For Viola, who reached out to him on the ground. For Ben, who wouldn’t stop saying he had lost his son. For Viola again when she wasn’t able to kill 1017, but promised killing him the next time she saw him. And something inside me had a little bit of hope that they could bring him back and he was there in front of viola, Noise leaking out of him. And in the end we can get into his head and see that he IS alive and it isn’t a post mortem reflex. And he says Viola to hold on, that he is in his way. And I died.

An incredible conclusion to the trilogy. I think I won’t reread it for a long, looooooong time (because they are long, looooooong books), but it’s a story that will stay with me forever. I’m gonna miss Todd and Viola so much it already hurts.

The first book was so compelling that I was disappointed when I didn't enjoy books 2 & 3 nearly as much. The motivation for many of the characters seemed weak, especially Mayor Prentiss. There were a couple of bright spots that kept my interest and the ending surprised me. Overall, it was ok, but definitely not on par with the first book.
