3.5/5 rounded up. TLDR: The writing style of this book put me off in a way that is probably entirely personal so I will talk about it but not hold it against it too bad. A mostly decent conclusion to this really good series.
This is the conclusion of the Chaos Walking series. The last two books were absolutely amazing so I am a little disappointed to have struggled so much with this one.
We again pick up with Viola and Todd as they try to keep the world together that is rapidly being pulled apart by opposing forces. A greater threat pulls everyone together as they race the clock to make the world safe for the large incoming population.
So my problems with this book might be entirely personal: I often struggle with multi-POV (which seems like its every single YA/fantasy/sci fi book nowadays). The last book of the series opened us up to the perspective of Viola. This book adds a third POV but the problem comes less from that addition and more into how often the perspective shifts. It’s constant. Scenes will be told from character and mid-sentence swap to another character. It was too much and really broke my ‘reading flow’. Swapping POV’s really resets my brain kind of like walking through a doorway and you forgot why you walked into the room in the first place. So imagine that happening every other page and you have the story slowed down dramatically for myself. Its frustrating to constantly reorient my own brain.
Second, I really didn’t like where we went with the villain. The reasonings for keeping him around and with power and trust seemed flimsy and nonsensical, which made what he got away with more and more ridiculous. He went from being mysterious and terrifying in the last book to a petty crazy person in this one.
There are definitely things I did like in this though. I thought the background and info about the Spackle was a welcome and interesting addition. I really liked Simon as a new character and hearing how a new man adjusts to the Noise on the planet. Viola and Todd continued to be wonderful characters and they are so ride-or-die that I love them to pieces. They had a little bump in the road but honestly it just made it clear how much love there was between them to me that Viola couldn’t stand to be separated from any part of Todd.
There was definitely plenty to love, I just struggled to read it because of the formatting. Otherwise, I would definitely recommend this series! It was a really pleasant surprise.
Bonus content (ha):
I also didn’t realize they made this into a movie until I was almost done the series. Just watched the preview and uh, no thank you. I feel like I could have told anyone this wouldn’t make a good movie. Anyone read books they just know won't translate to screen well?

It’s a shame that I’m finishing off the trilogy with such a low rating, especially since book one was a 5-star for me. This book was full of repetitive battles and fighting and multiple failed attempts at peacemaking. I pushed through the tedious violence of the first half hoping the ending would redeem the whole thing, which it didn’t as much as I hoped it would. I found it very odd that the true resolution to the story was found not in the end of the actual book, but rather the “bonus” short story pinned on at the end. I know some people see “bonus short stories” and decide to skip over them, so I would’ve been exponentially more disappointed with the ending had I chosen to do so this time.
Ultimately, Chaos Walking is a unique trilogy with some great fast-paced action. It’s just too bad that the series went downhill after book one and didn’t pick back up in book three. At least I’ll remember book one fondly.

Pretty much the same as the other two books.
I finished this late last night and decided to take some time to process this final book in this trilogy.
Overall, I think this was a good finale and solid ending to an amazing dystopian fiction trilogy. I believe the first 300 pages took a little bit of pushing to get through as the war with the sparkle had some slow parts, however, the second half blew me away. Ness has such a great way of importing twists to completely change what is about to happen next. He writes deaths perfectly to where you will feel it mentally and emotionally. There was a plot hole that I don't believe was totally necessary, however, I really enjoyed seeing how all the seeds Ness planted in book 1 and 2 came to life in this final book. The character development is immaculate, and I think Mayor Prentis is one of the best villains written of all time.
I am very excited for the film adaptation of book one to arrive in March. But I am sad that this trilogy is complete as it is one of my new favorites.

Do not read this if you value your unbroken heart. And I'm not saying this just so YOU DO read this; readers are a weird bunch ( myself included ) This isn't a book that will break you and put you back together, no this book will break you. AND COME ON ??? I'M SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE ON THE BITS OF SCRAPS YOU GAVE ME IN THE LAST CHAPTER? NOT EVEN BITS! This is worst then then "hopeful" ending of As Good as Dead!
Truth be told I was disappointed. But that happened first at the end. Book 1 was so freaking amazing and I could not put it down. Book 2 was ok but things did not feel the same, and then this third one was ok. But not spectacular anymore.
Though I like how he brings in choice, genocide, feminism, and terrorism into this strange world. Because it is a good world, where the thoughts of men and animals can be heard and there is never silence.
Todd had to free the mayor/president so that he could lead the army against the spackle, the indgineous people of the planet. Behind Prentiss' army is another army, the women's army, they who the men wanted dead because the were silent. Then the spaceships arrive.
So it's a book about war, and terror.
Now why did I not like it, well the last 50 pages you got me mad. I got disappointed in someone and then angry cos in the end I just did not get it. Was it a happy ending, three words does not make it so. it could have been 2 other things too. So after reading 600 pages I wanted it a lot clearer and the whole book just got destroyed by it.

This was a pretty satisfying ending to the trilogy. The stakes were high, and the action well-paced. Still love the use of font. As a whole this trilogy was a total win.

It was very receptive and took me awhile to get through. It picked up towards the end though.
