I got this series via ARC. I knew nothing about them, just dove in. I’m so glad I did! I have really enjoyed the first two so far. The character development is really enjoyable. The plots are well thought out. The story line is intriguing and I keep jumping from one to the next as I want to stay on Nemain’s journey and see where it leads. Highly recommend for anyone who are fans of Throne of Glass with slightly more spice.

This is what I get for judging a book by its cover.

For some reason I thought this was a fantasy book not urban fantasy/paranormal romance. Turns out I'm not the target audience.

This was a huge mess. I have no idea what I was thrown into. Everything happened so fast with random info dumps of sometimes unnecessary information. Every magical creature you could possibly imagine was probably in here. This book tried too hard to be dark and badass. All of the characters were snarky and annoying, and the main character, although over 300 years old, acted like an immature teenager. (She also said that the Greek gods are the lamest

I really enjoyed A Shift in Shadows for it's unique world and characters. Nemain was both powerful and sympathetic, and the response to past trauma in her personality deepened the character. The pacing was steady throughout and kept me engaged. The world building was the most intriguing part for me, and I loved that it was well spaced out so I was never overwhelmed by it. There were a lot of threads introduced and I look forward to seeing where the story goes from here.

Shapeshifters, Werewolves, Vampires & Daemons galore in this exciting battle between Nemain and her former lover and kidnapper Sebastian.

An excellent plot, great world building and a cast of characters to fall in love with.

Well worth a read

Adding a plus for including queer characters.

A Shift in Shadows by Maddox Grey

WOW THIS WAS GOOD!

adventurous dark mysterious tense fast-paced

So this is a complex book, with all the fun magical type creatures! Shifters, Warlocks, Witches, Vampires, Deamons, and the like. We are following a Feline shifter named Nemain, who is being hunted by her ex. You follow twists and turns as Nemain discovers her powers and opens herself up to love again. It ended on an absolute Cliffhanger, but I can't wait for book 2

Thank you so much to NetGalley for sharing an ARC of A Shift in Shadows in exchange for an honest review.

This novel is a really fun and quick read, for fans of contemporary fantasy I think this would be right up their street. It's gritty and dark, and doesn't pull any punches when it comes to the realities of living in a world filled with paranormal creatures.

I loved Nemain and her complicated relationships with those around her. She was a really fun and well rounded main character.

I'm not a massive contemporary fantasy lover, I much prefer high fantasy but I did enjoy this book even if it wasn't 100% for me. If you're a fan of The Vampire Diaries, I think this would be the perfect grown-up read for you.

It's a great first book in a series and I'm excited to see where the book goes.
