*AUDIOBOOK REVIEW*
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A Shift in Shadows by Maddox Grey
Lost Legacies: Book 1
This dark, urban fantasy features Nemain, a feisty feline shifter FMC with unique, forbidden magic and a fae cat companion. I can't wait for you to meet Jinx! You know I love my animal companions and Jinx is amazing! 🐈⬛
Nemain is being hunted by her warlock ex-boyfriend that is set on using her for her magical abilities. Unfortunately, word of her unique magic has reached the warlock counsel who have employed vampires to help them capture her. Nemain must fight to keep her loved ones safe and ensure her freedom. This book has fae, vampires, mermaids, demons, werewolves, witches, unique magic systems, found family, and romance! I am thinking the romance may take a turn however 🤔 I'll have to find out in the next book!
As for the audiobook itself (2x speed), the narrator does a really good job with the dialog, but the basic narrative sounds really automated at times. Occasionally I felt like Siri was reading me the book 😆
I'm excited to dive into the next one! I have the ARC for A Shift in Death which releases August 13th so I'm trying to fly through this series! So far it's pretty good!

This is the the first book in the Lost Legacies series, an urban fantasy romance. Tropes include a stabby FMC, found family, banter, hidden identifies and numerous types of non-human beings. Please see content warnings for adult content, in particular, a couple spicy scenes.
The Lovely: I loved the FMC - especially her snark and how clever she is. She’s experienced grief and trauma, and is still being impacted by the after effects. This is not a story of healing from the trauma - she doesn’t seem ready for that quite yet. I also loved her friends, especially her telepathic XL kitty (a grimalkin) - who also happens to have some protective and violent tendencies.
The Mundane: I felt like it took me a while to get into the story. A good chunk of the first one-third to one-half of the book was meeting characters and world-building, without much advancement of the plot. The world-building was complex so time did need to be spent on this, but so much so quickly made it hard to retain what I was reading.
Rating: 4/5 Stars 2/5 spicy flames
Recommendation: This was a solid start to the series, which is currently five books long. The sixth book is due to release in August 2024. I will definitely be continuing with the series. While book one didn’t end on a major cliffhanger, there are a lot of unanswered questions. In addition, there was an interesting bit of information dropped in the epilogue that I definitely want to know more about.
I really struggled to into A SHIFT IN SHADOWS but this was down to me. There were a lot of characters in the beginning and I struggled to keep them all separate, I felt this is what kept me stopping and starting.
Once I got back into the rhythm it was fast paced so it grabbed my attention.
While I'm on the fence for this novel as I didn’t love it but I didn't dislike it either, I would still recommend it if you like fantasy/paranormal.

The main character is very unlikeable. A lot of the dialogues were cringe and they made me visibly roll my eyes at them. I struggled through this book and I only finished it because it was an audiobook. It starts off promising but the only truly likeable character is Margot, the plot is full of fantasy cliches and they aren’t written well enough to be enjoyable.
