We all know I love a dystopia. But this one was super interesting. I loved the ending!

Easy read, but it did not make me invest into the characters enough, to continue reading the series.

4.5 I’m only not giving it five because... manchee :C

I don’t really know how to feel about this book. I don’t think I liked but, but I didn’t hate it either. The story is interesting however I had two main issues with it. One, the big reveal, when you get all the answers to the questions you’ve been asking, happens right at the very end of the book, and way way way too late if you ask me. By that point you have already figured out what happened, so when they tell you the ‘shocking truth’ it just isn’t all that shocking.
The second issue is that it’s depressing the whole way through. It’s just one bad thing after the other and it never gets better. There isn’t even a ‘kind of’ happy ending where you know it’ll get worse later, but for now it’s okay. It’s just all bad and hopeless and sad and depressing, and I need a little more than that to make it enjoyable to read.
So much so that towards the end of the book when the characters think they’ve found the gold at the end of the rainbow, I just knew that wasn’t going to be the case, which made it really quite predictable.
Just wish it was different I suppose.

Maybe a little less than four. But really good. And great audiobook reader.

Oh my God oh my God oh my God. I have been wanting to read this book for the longest time, but the file in my Nook was corrupted and I forgot. I finally got a new copy and started reading it and I could not stop. The book takes place in the future, when humans have started to colonize new planets. In this planet, there is a side effect where the men become able to listen to the thoughts of the people around you. Honestly, I think the author did a really good job in portraying the way that people think. The book is very fast paced. The characters are well-rounded, but the villains are not. The concept is very interesting, original, and well written. I will say that there is one part of the book that talks about complicity, being complicit. It's really interesting and kind of applies to the political world that we now live in (for example, anyone else remember the clip where Ivanka Trump did not know the meaning of the word complicit...) Anyways,
Spoiler that part with the fucking dog tore my heart apart. Best dog written in any book.
I need to get the next book. This one ended on such a cliffhanger, which I usually hate, but it was such a wild ride. I found myself guessing and trying to figure out what was going on and was so frustrated with the characters sometimes for not making obvious decisions, but yeah. That's how you know it's a good book, I guess?

I have a LOT of conflicting emotions about this book.

On the one hand, it is a gripping tale, the language (though disconcerting at first) works well to immerse us in this New World, and the concept is very interesting.

On the other hand, there are things that bothered me to no end:
- withholding information from your readers even though you're using first-person narration. It's not a rule, per say, but the fact that the author teases us multiple times with "I finally know what the awful secret is, it's...oh no, I can't say it (yet)" is incredibly frustrating.
- the villains are cartoon characters. It's ridiculous.
- the main character is inconsistently written. Some would say it's a realistic portrayal of a teenager, but I disagree.
-
Spoiler THE FREAKING DOG DIES? NO.

While you would think that the bad would outweigh the good and that I wouldn't recommend this book, I can't really do that. It WAS a very interesting premise, and the cliffhanger ending did leave me wanting to know what would happen next. I only hope those faults I noticed get better in the sequel. This book is not the best YA book I've read, but then again there is so much good YA that exists that it's not exactly an insult.

2.5 ⭐
