Iep Jaltok is written by Marshallese poet Kathy Jetnil-Kilijiner and it blew me away with some really hard hitting poems especially those exploring the impact of US nuclear legacy and it continuing legacy (high cancer rates as a result of radioactive fallout), the urgency of the climate crisis, and the racism faced by Marshallese people in Hawaii, where a significant number live and work. Another poem that grabbed my attention looked at the way World War II altered traditional diets and the health consequences of this for people now addicted to low-quality, highly processed foods. Many of these poems were composed as spoken word poetry and I was able to track down several YouTube videos of her performing her work. Wow. The power and passion was remarkable. Highly recommend them. And check out her blog which provides context for many of her poems.
