Great start, then slows down a bit. Interesting characters. I will be reading the second book as well.
This book seemed right up my alley. It had sci-fi, women's empowerment, and some alternate history. The premise is interesting enough. A meteor hits Earth launching the space race ahead so colonies can be established before climate change. I, however, often felt annoyed or bored with the book. The cringe and out-of-place sex scenes dragged down the book, and the pacing felt off. This isn't a quick read; it took me three weeks of my library loan to finish it. The weird taking medication for your anxiety makes you weak messaging threw me off (even though I knew that was the sentiment of the time.) It's not a bad book. It just could be so much more, and I was disappointed as I had been trying to read it for the past couple of months and was looking forward to it. If you have the time, it's a nice read, but it didn't hook me into the series or the universe enough.

An engaging read that sets up an alternative history with an apocalyptic event and examines sexism and racism in the workplace. It's a lot to fit in, but Mary Robinette Kowal tells an engaging story. I'm looking forward to the second book already.

Like reading a historical novel even if it was alternate history, well written and engaging.
A retelling of space history similar to the Hidden Figures. In the 1950’s a meteorite wipes out Washington D.C. killing millions on the eastern coast of the U.S. and to save the human species the US begins a space program. The book follows Elma York a WWII Wasp Pilot and a brilliant mathematician as she tries to overcome bias and become an astronaut.

So this was a book where I was way more into the conceit and story than the characters, which is unusual for me.
It speaks to how compelling the story is that I kept reading all the way through, even though I found the main character very annoying (is this intentional? I'd love to know!)
I'm going to give the second story a go
