Just finished this book. It was totally not what I had expected. Story wise it was pretty solid, very well written en great narration. But Sci-fi? Its more a story about women and race equality in the 50s than a sci-fi story. Don't get me wrong, its a very well written book, you do really step into the life of the main character. The book focuses on all the small details, how people are feeling, the 50s, etc. No action. For me this book didn't bring what I was looking for, With Sci-Fi, I am expecting more action.
Thats why I gave it 3 stars. Its not related to the quality of the book, but my rating related to how I was entertained.

Wow. I was unprepared for the emotions I encountered in this novel. The whole narrative as presented by Elma is amazing and totally in character. The backwards (by today's standards) view of women's roles in society are infuriating and completely in line with the novel's setting.

The ending came abruptly for me, likely due to ending at the 90% mark on my kindle due to the bonus chapter for the sequel. However that final chapter is gorgeously written and I actually went back to read it a second time.

Looking forward to more in this universe!

What's better than a good old alt history of the space program? One that tears down the patriarchy, of course!

3.5 stars.
In the very first pages, a meteor hits 1950s East Coast United States. Scientists expect that there will be a major climate shift on top of the immediate catastrophe, and one logical solution is to try to get to Mars to build a colony and save humanity. Elma is a pilot-mathematician) and her husband is an engineer (both with PhDs), so they are obviously exactly what NASA and the UN space department need in order to move forward. Except for those tiny details of rampant sexism and crippling anxiety, Elma is perfect for the job!
There are some details of this alternate history that were compelling, and some that felt weird, forced, or brushed over. It's a tough line to walk, trying to show modern cultural relevance in a very specific period piece, and I'm not sure that the characters were quite memorable and relatable to help us make the bridge. Still fun to read, but not a must-have.

Oh my what a turd.
