3⭐️ the journey was fun, but the destination fell flat

i feel like this one just backed itself into a corner to where the options for how it could end were so limited?? if you liked this one i’d recommend reading The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware bc it was like this but better imo

bonus points for taking place in DC (that’s where i’m from and all the little details about cities and roads in the dmv area were fun)

I liked this book. My investment in the plot didn’t really pick up until a third of the way through, but it still did a fine job keeping me interested up to that point.
This story doubled as a two for one - focusing on both the narrators own personal struggles/predicaments and the custody case/murder mystery she is working on. The author did a good job blending the two. I didn’t get a sense of whiplash between the two storylines which was nice.
I would say this is a typical “whodunit” murder mystery. So what I thought was going to be a predictable turn of events, still managed to keep me questioning each suspect the entire time. The ending was not exactly jaw dropping, but it was fairly satisfactory. I loved that every question was answered and the author did a wonderful job avoiding any loose ends or plot holes.
Did this book keep me on the very edge of my seat? No. It was overall a bit underwhelming, and I think it will be a bit forgettable for me personally. However, it was still a fairly engaging story with good character development — not only for the main character, but for several of the supporting characters which I enjoyed.
