The Midnight Star

4.02 AVERAGE

I really need to make a "shook" shelf now

my heart is so full right now

4.5?? Basically everything happened that I wanted to but... maybe that made it less exciting? Idk how to feel!!

Overall I think this is such a solid series, each book I read in about a day because it's so good and the protagonist Adelina is so compelling.

Marie Lu closes the series with a folktale that I thought was the perfect ending. Will Adelina be remembered for her power? Her wickedness? Or will her legacy be the family she fought for, and the love that chased her? Well, it depends who you ask and what tales you hear. And maybe they're all true.

β€œTo those who, in spite of everything, still choose kindness.”

Two words. TRULY REMARKABLE. In this final instalment of The Young Elites, I can say that it was concluded so unexpectedly and beautifully. With high expectations, the ending is successful to make me cry and make me feel like I relate to the characters in this book. This book is another evidence that Marie Lu is indeed a fantastic writer!

We get to see Adelina’s transformation from a girl with so much hatred, to a vengeful queen, and finally a sister. It was a journey that left a mark and this book will be that one book that the story I remember so clearly. All because of how impactful it was.
If you wonder how it feels like, it is like watching the Maleficent but so much more darkness. So many bold sacrifices & changes both in terms of its characters and plot, much more honesty in the hearts of the characters, and a story that brings you to the idea that in spite of the dark in someone, there will always be some light. In spite of everything, people are good at heart.β €
I will mention this again: I applaud for that ending. Her decision to construct the ending to such a way makes the story so much more wholesome & humane. This book is my favourite out of all three.
5/5 stars 🌟

What are your thoughts?

Oh, man.
One hell of a finale.
HIGHLY recommended to everyone who likes fantasy.
I almost cried... and that's something that happens only when a book is REALLY emotional. So yeah. Want inner conflict and tears? Read this.

Oh Adelina, I will miss you.

the first and only thing you need to know is that The Midnight Star is a gorgeous and fitting end to Adelina's story. It is rare to finish such a beloved series with anything other than satisfaction, but that is how it is. I am in awe of Marie Lu.

I love Adelina because she is angry, dark, and absolutely horrible. She is irredeemable and had made terrible mistakes that will never be okay. she can never be a real hero, not after what she did. but regardless of all that, she was loved by her sister, and a beautiful boy who saw her at her worst and never let her go.

I think we all have a bit of Adelina in us. it's the fear that stops us from opening up to the people that love us and the fury of injustice we see each and every day. I can't pretend Adelina burning down the world isn't compelling. Adelina was so powerless for so long, when she had her chance all she did was amass as much power as she could and try to change the world in her name. she didn't do it out of a sense of ideals or justice. no matter her power, she couldn't escape her past or the terror that never left her. it wasn't something she could wish away, she always had to live with exactly who she was and what she did.

she murdered in cold blood. she hurt people and liked it. and yet, I couldn't bring myself to hate her. we have seen Adelina's pain and worst moments. I remember her regret and her fear, and it is these moments that make Adelina worth fighting for.

the midnight star is not a story about redemption, but about love, and that even in the darkest of times, there is still a light.

It is my first book of 2017, a one-sit read, and a five star finale showcasing YA at its best.

Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

The ending was beautiful, of course, but I simply cannot forgive how this book seems to have a plot of its own disconnected from the first and second book. It’s as if the plot of the first book ended in the second, forcing the author to cook up some other plot to create a proper ending.

SPOILERS IN THE REVIEW

This series reminded me why I used to love young adult fiction.

That's not to say that I don't still read it or enjoy it, but I don't read YA nearly as much as I used to. Part of that has to do with my desire to read about characters my own age and also how my tastes have changed over the years.

But there is something so unique and special about the young adult genre. And Marie Lu has reminded me about it.

This was not a happy story. It was not some epic tale of good vs. evil, but a story about a girl who was fighting her demons from within. A story about bloodlust and revenge surrounding a character that against all odds, I rooted for throughout the series. I cheered for her as she enacted her revenge, cried at her death, and cried again when she found her place among the stars.

God, I loved that ending. I thought it was perfect.

Hats off to you, Ms. Lu. You've garnered my respect and admiration.

This book was so fantastic! It was such a wonderful ending to the series, a bit sad, but yeah, amazing and wonderful to read, and everything wrapped up nicely!
