Wow...
I have no idea whether the series has always been this bad or if this book just took an enormous dip in quality. Don't get me wrong, I never considered it great literature, but i used to like it. I liked it enough to spend my hard earned money on the second book and eventually buy this final book on audible (thank goodness for audible's top-notch return policy).
My gripes with this book are threefold;
Firstly, the writing isn't great. No, actually, it's bad. It's fanfiction-esque and nothing makes me cringe more. In addition, the audible narrator seems to take that bad writing to the next level of cringe. Her voice is nice and I'm sure she has done better work. But, it was just so over the top and it truly highlighted the over dramatized goings on. I think hearing it all out loud made it so much more ridiculous. Maybe that is why I liked the first to books that I read myself.
This brings me to my second point. The plot is just bad, plain and simple. This book suffers severely from third book syndrome. The author had clearly envisioned an ending and, instead of letting the story unfold, she just forced it to head towards that end in as short a time as possible. it is messy, rushed and illogical.
Lastly, and probably most importantly, the character development, neigh, everything about the characters is the worst. Adelina starts out in a very specific mindset (which I didn't find entirely justified after the ending of book 2, but what ever) and let's just say she is less than good. and we see it from her perspective and it is still impossible to emphasize with her. I get that she is broken and traumatized, but I don't think it is a compelling portrayal of a psychological breakdown. And I certainly don't think it is a healthy one. But, if you wanna make the main character the new villain, I'm not entirely against it. However, by the middle of the book, Adelina wants to play a different tune. She basically does an entire 180 within a few chapters and now she wants to be good. Not only is this development happening to fast, in terms of pages, but it also takes too little time inside the story. this major character development happens in, like what, one month, maybe two. Why!
Maybe this could have worked over two books, instead of one, but i honestly doubt it. Adelina is not the only offender as all the characters feels pretty flat.
I gave this book two stars, instead of one, because i did enjoy some of the world building and the lore. I have a soft spot for anything European/history-esque and it definitely gave me those vibes.
