The Midnight Star

Marie Lu

4.02 AVERAGE

for the most part, the serie was pretty average to me. don't get me wrong, the story itself and the way marie lu drives the characters is good different. however, personally i didnt become attached to the story and didnt connect to most characters. i was just reading to get the closure i needed for the story. the only thing that made it pleasantly bearable was magiciano; and the ending fixed it for me a bit. made it more emotional for me that it originally was.

I am so conflicted and just generally confused about my feelings for this book.

I'm not sure if it felt too short or just too rushed, but there just wasn't enough bridging between the 3 books (in my opinion). The first book starts with Adelina finding out about her power and about the Elites and eventually being betrayed, the second book was about her move for the throne and revenge (with a very small portion dedicated to the Elites getting sick), and book 3 felt like it wasn't about anything but the main quest.

By main quest I mean their attempt to fix the split between the mortal and the immortal worlds. I understand that the first 2 books kind of led up to this, but there just wasn't enough. Up until I started reading this one, I didn't care about the sickness or about what Gods the Elites align with. To be honest, I still really don't. The reason I loved the first two books was because of Adelina and her dark twisted mind and this book did not have enough of the darkness (other than the beginning). It just felt so separated from the points of the first two books. I realize that it's a great thing to explain why the Elites have power and to abolish that power in the mortal world to save everyone and the world itself, but I would have cared more if that was the main intent of the series from the beginning. Instead, it felt like it was suddenly thrust upon me and I would just have to accept it like everyone else.

I did enjoy the ending (I always love a martyr), especially after all Adelina had been through. Who would be able to live with themselves after all of that? She would have returned to a world where she was beyond hated, and now would have no powers to defend herself or the throne. I almost wish that there were another like 2 books in between that deal with the gradual sicknesses of those with powers and the mystery of trying to find out what's happening to them. Instead, it's like Rafealle knew the answer almost immediately, he knew exactly what was happening and how to stop it. I loved the journey of the first 2 books too much to feel like this is the proper ending of Adelina's story.

This is the final book in the young elite series. It is a good ending but not really a strong one.

i’ll start with the good things. The characters were good. It was great seeing everyone team up: old and new characters, and also a villain; in order to accomplish a common goal. It was entertaining to see Adelina’s Anti-hero journey. I liked the complicated sister relationship as the whispers caused Adelina to go crazy.

I don’t think enough has happened for Adelina to be redeemed. She is more of a complicated person than a bad one. It is easy to sympathies with her, so it is easy to forget that she killed a lot of people (or at least did actions that led to there death). There should of been more scenes of her connecting to the Daggers or little moments with her sister.

The only other issue is a pacing. It felt like the book should of at least been 100 more pages. At times the journey felt rushed.

Plus there wasn’t enough time spend on what happends afterwards. How does the people react? How do they stay in power? I am not sure how I like the new queen. We didn’t get to see her build skills for leading. Also, what deal did Violette make with the god? It doesn’t say what Violette gave up but it saids that she made a deal. Everyone’s ending I didn’t find that satisfying or more build to it.

THAT ENDING WOW

I absolutely adore this series. The characters were brilliantly written, Marie Lu is a genius.
The world she created just unfolds in your mind and wraps around you. The characters make you feel for them in a way where you want to cry or hug or yell with them.

IT’S SO GOOD!!!  One of my new favorite fantasy series’ for sure.

(+) Magiano
(+) Fitting end for Adelina and Violetta

(-) Never got a solid sense of the setting other than "generic medieval European."
(-) The little quips at the beginning of every chapter didn't really do anything for me either.
(-) The journey into the underworld thing at the end DEFINITELY didn't work for me.
(-) I wish it could've been more than just giving the gods their powers back and we're done.

SUMMED UP: A predictable but fitting final outcome, but lackluster as a whole.

SERIES AS A WHOLE: Nothing we haven't seen before, but has a lot of good moments and the protagonist actually faces consequences for her actions. Ending didn't do it for me, though.

RAMBLINGS: There's going to be a Marie Lu book I like at some point. She's got a lot of great ideas, but nothing has truly resonated with me or blown me away yet. I will continue to check out her releases.

3.5 Stars

I definitely would have loved this more if I had reread the past two books beforehand.

Oh well.

This series was really entertaining. I loved the morally gray aspects. I found the ending to be satisfying.

My biggest issue is that some parts of this felt rushed or a little underdeveloped. I feel like every book in this series could have been a little longer, could have given a little more.
