This was a very interesting and creative take with magic, blood, deception, and tough choices. I look forward to the sequel.

The story definitely is interesting which is why it is unfortunate that the writing is too underdeveloped to stimulate the motivation to keep reading.

dnf @ 35%. boyyyy did this book put me in a reading slump! honestly such a disappointment because I love this authors previous work. also I started this book in January and its now July, so it has literally taken me 6 months to a) read a grand total of 156/451 pages and b) actually DNF the book.

I enjoyed the characters in this book but I found the plot a little hard to follow.

Had to DNF this because the writing was so low-quality, repetitive, and meaningless. The novel as a whole is unfocused and meandering, with excruciating over-explaining. Maybe I was mistaken picking this up and expecting more from a YA novel, but Skye writes like she's doing everything she can to ensure the reader has no other interpretation of plot occurrences and characters' actions than her's. This desperate hammering of my reading experience makes this book exhausting to read in long stretches, and aggravating when I try to engage with it on a deeper level.

I originally picked this up because I thought the world-building resembled my own WIP novel's world-buidling, and I will admit that Skye is very strong in that arena. But god, reading this was a wake-up call that writing a fantasy novel is not solely about the world; it's about the people and events happening within that world, too.

For those reading here, I actually laughed OUT LOUD when the book revealed Hana was still alive, and that's ultimately what made me decide to DNF. :P

I liked the idea of this story but it was the writing style that really let it down for me. I couldn't bring myself to finish it
