As someone who has never played chess but always was curious about it i loved this book. It was nice to see something so ordinary as chess be shown in such high lights for the younger generation and intertwined the cutest rivals to lovers storyline into it. I loved the depth and self doubt that blossomed into confidence in the main female character and how she fell back in love with the sport of chess as well as found love. Overall this was a cute love story and i loved every minute of it!

4.25 - I loved the story. Nolan had me kicking and giggling so much. Mallory was so oblivious to things I wanted to pull my hair out, yet she was hilarious. The ending was super rushed, which dropped my rating significantly. I also think that as a YA book, the content was too adult for being labeled YA. Still highly recommend reading.

This book is adorable and such a easy and cute read. I gave it 3 instead of 4 stars because I’m not a big chess person (I know absolutely nothing), but she didn’t delve into too much detail that I felt lost. I knew Mallory was going to have to win the world championships because it’s an Ali Hazelwood book duh but she wrote it in a very heartwarming way that made the win even sweeter.

“My heart revs up to a million. Nearly beats out of my chest with everything that I’m feeling for him. I don’t want to leave. I want to be with him. I want to sleep with him in this bed. I want to wake up to him pulling me into himself. I want to eat the overcooked pasta he makes and share his toothpaste and know his moods by heart.”

Ali Hazelwood stop making me cry! I loved it. 4.5 just because it got slow-ish at some points and I just kept wanting to push it along. Also I need an Oz and Dafne book next please. The few moments we get to see Oz were so funny.
