Well, what a cracking read that was. I regret not picking this off my shelf sooner because I just couldn't put it down once I had!
Maura Isles goes off to a concert in Wyoming and doesn't return when she is expected to, instead she's trapped in isolation and what is the start of a terrifying cat and mouse read, that had my heart racing.
This was the perfect crime thriller read for me, fast paced, trusting no one and just exciting to read.

Medical examiner Maura Isles and Boston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli are back.

Maura has left to attend a medical convention. While there, she meets up with an old college classmate. His name is Doug. He is here with his thirteen year old daughter, Grace, and his friend Arlo and Arlo’s girlfriend, Elaine. Doug invites Maura to join them. After the convention, they are heading up to a ski resort. Maura takes Doug up on his offer.

The group heads out but they get lost and the vehicle gets stuck in snow. The group gets lucky and finds shelter in a small town called Kingdom Come. There is something wrong with Kingdom Come. How come all the houses are identical and where are all the people?

Jane receives a phone call that will change her life forever. The Wyoming police have identified the charred body of Maura. Jane can’t believe Mura is gone. Jane investigates to discover the truth about what happened to Maura and uncovers a sinister plot.

The queen of medical thrillers…Tess Gerritsen is back and in better form then ever with her latest novel, Ice Cold. I was spellbound but this book. You would have had to rip it from my cold, dead hands as I literally had a hard time putting it down. I finished it in one day. My only issue was that I found the story line involving Maura to be much more interesting then Jane trying to figure out what had happened to Maura. The intensity would fizzle a bit when the story line would switch back to Jane. Though, it was great to see Jane in action again. She is as tough as before. Ice Cold left me scorching, hot for more!

I hadn't read Tess Gerritsen before this book, but I can't wait to read more by her. Her writing is sharp and treats the readers as intelligent human beings.

This was a fun, fast read, but it's not one of my favorites by Tess. I think she's written better in the past. Maybe it was the subject matter of cults that didn't interest me as much as her past work. I still love the characters of Maura and Jane though, and it was interesting to see their lives developed even further.

Gerritsen does it again with this topical mystery. The story goes at a good pace with quite a few plot twists and engaging characters. As I read the book, it reminded me of the plural marriage compounds in Utah and the news stories of sex with underage girls.

I blasted through this in one day. What a wild ride, I could hardly put it down. I've been loving the Rizzoli & Isles series, and can't wait to start the next one.

I have never been a huge crime/mystery/cop novel person but I have read all the Rizzoli and Isles books after getting hooked on the show and I love them. Granted, I like the tv portrayal of the characters and their friendship better, but Tess Gerritsen knows how to tell a good story.

This novel grabs your attention right away and holds it until you have read the last page. It starts with what seems like some sort of mormon like (or polygamy) cult and then moves on to Maura Isles' point of view. Maura is at a conference of some sort for doctors and she gets invited to tag along on a weekend ski trip by an old fellow classmate. She accepts and things start to go wrong. Their car breaks down in the middle of nowhere and the group (Maura, her old classmate, Doug, his 13 year old daughter, Grace, and his two friends Arlo and Eliaine) is forced to try and walk to the gas station they stopped at 30 miles earlier. Did I mention they are in Wyoming in the middle of winter?

So they come to this "village" that is completely void of human life, electricity, and the same man is in every family photo hanging in the individual houses. Food is left congealed on the tables, dead dogs and pet birds are found, and snow prints that aren't the groups keep popping up.

Of course there is no cell reception.

I don't think I should mention anything more for fear of giving too much away, but Jane does get involved later on as well.

This was perhaps one of the best and more interesting of this series. As I said before, it totally held my attention for a complete day I did nothing but read this book. I highly recommend it.

While this did not have the most plausible plot, I did enjoy the fast pace and found it very suspenseful. Listened to the audio version which was narrated by Tanya Eby who I thought did a good job.
