A dystopian setting. A future world where an omniscient AI is implanted in everyoneโ€™s brain.  A world in which a deadly fog has descended upon the earth, obliterating every living thing in its path. One last stand for humanity exists on a remote island at the end of the world, where the villagers farm their own crops, cultivating the land through days of hard work followed by singing, art, and music in the evenings. Underneath this idyllic landscape however, there are mysterious deaths, a saboteur at large, and not everything is as it seems...

Read if you love unreliable characters, questionable morality, whether the ends justify the means, and murder mystery style twists and turns. I found myself binging this one. I read it in just a couple of days. Iโ€™m not sure itโ€™s going to stick in permanent memory, but it was an enjoyable read. I really loved the main character Emory.  Everyone else was unlikeable to me and I did not trust a single one of them! This was my first Stuart Turton and I am inclined to pick up the The 7.5 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle which I have heard is excellent.

Thanks to @netgalley and @sourcebooks for allowing me to read an advanced reader copy - this book is out now!

I think Turton books are ones that would be fun to return to, as they are quite a bit denser and more layered than your average mystery. This is certainly a genre blend though, with some dystopia, some sci-fi, and then your basic murder investigation. There is a lot of information to take in over the course of the story, many technological surprises that change the flavor of the murder mystery. This isn't a whodunit that you can unravel on your own, as you will have no idea what pieces are even possible until the end. One thing that bugged me about the characters was that I couldn't tell what generation/age they were from the dialog. I would be reading and then suddenly be reminded that this is a child, or this is an adult who is talking about her own adult father, or whatever. It definitely helped to have the AI narrator bringing the threads together, even if it was also unreliable.

I was super excited to read The Last Murder at the End of the World. The description of this book sounded so interesting and thought-proving. However, for me it did not live up to the hype. I felt like Turton did not use the idea of the plot to its fullest, and the way he wrote made the story complicated. It seemed congested with words instead of letting the plot explain itself.

Truly a masterpiece. Read in one sitting, and itโ€™s the only book thatโ€™s ever captivated me enough to do that.

I've been enjoying more murder mysteries lately and this was no exception. While everyone else on the last island in the world is content and accepting of life as it is, Emory thinks outside the box and her questions are often frowned upon. However, when the leader of the scientists and islanders is found dead, and the island barrier begins to go down, it's up to Emory to solve the case and her people.

I felt the story did drag a little towards the end and the resolution could've come sooner. Overall it was a nice murder mystery with a little doomsday backdrop.

Happy US Pub Day to Stuart Turton's newest book! Thanks to @netgalley @bookmarked @sourcebooks for the ARC!

genre blends are actually some of the greatest inventions of authors, and all the more so when they actually WORK. the last murder at the end of the world blends mystery and science-fiction very, very well. i donโ€™t even like sci-fi but hey, i was actually able to understand most of what was happening!!

this story essentially follows a small cast of characters who are trying to solve a murder on their island within two days. why within two days? because a fog that killed the rest of humanity, a fog that has been held at bay for decades due to some type of science technology (iโ€™m barely a woman in stem okay?!) is fast approaching and the only way to stop it is to solve the murder. whichโ€ฆmight not make sense but i promise you that the book makes the logic work.

i was genuinely bored for the first part of the novel. i did not care! i was a little confused! the book is told from the perspective of an omniscient narrator named Abi, and i struggled to truly connect with the characters because of it. that issue was true for me throughout the entire book.

however.

the mystery is unique, detailed, and thorough. you HAVE to pay attention to all the details, otherwise, you will not be able to solve it. stuart turton is brilliant at creating scenarios with fantastical elements and then weaving details in that might be passed over if you arenโ€™t used to it.

once the story got going, i was hooked. it was more than just a mystery, there were multiple characters with their own agendas that opened the door for quite a few twists. i was definitely shocked!

of course, all that being saidโ€ฆi will probably give this book a 3, 3.5 star rating. itโ€™s creative, unique, and twisty. i just truly struggled to care sometimes about the characters, and about some of the elements of the world. occasionally, the timeline would become very confusing which could just be a me problem. overall, i didnโ€™t love it in the same way i did evelyn hardcastle but it was still a fun blend of genres that kept me guessing!

I was really excited to get my hands on an ARC of this book as I really enjoyed The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, and this one did not disappoint! Stuart Turtonโ€™s mind works in the most fascinating of ways. He writes mysteries that are so thoughtful, twisty, and intelligent that you simply cannot guess how they will conclude, and this novel is no different.

Set on an island where a group of people have managed to escape the fog that wiped out the rest of humanity, a murder takes place and the entire groupโ€™s lives depend on solving the mystery of whodunit. While this novel is largely thriller/mystery, there is a sci-fi component which added an interesting and unique twist to the story.

Secrets are revealed as you go, almost like peeling back the layers of an onion. It allows you to get to know the characters little by little and builds interest and investment in the story the whole way through. I think what elevated this novel even higher for me were the moments of reflection on humanity and the obvious parallels to our world today. It added depth to the characters and the story as a whole. A book that makes me stop and think about life is always just a step above the rest for me.

Iโ€™m not going to say much more as this is a journey you just have to experience for yourself, but I highly recommend you do.
