I have been struggling with reading this book for months. While I’m sure the story was amazing when it was written (1962), alternate histories are more common now and this one I found really hard to get into. Certain characters were easier for me to follow (Julianna) and I enjoyed those story lines. I only understood bits and pieces of the political story lines and the associated characters positions in this society do not stick with me (and taking months to read it was definitely part of the problem). I was relieved every time those chapters ended and frustrated when perspective changed back to them. I found myself referencing study guides online to help figure it all out. I know the terse sentences were supposed to reflect the changing mindset but I found it distracting.

I love the idea of this alternate history but this implantation was just not for me.

Beautiful prose, though sometimes disjointed and confusing. I felt a bit out of my depth, but when I read a few analyses, I found that I had grasped it after all. I feel like I need to read it again and see how it plays out with the bigger picture in mind.

I enjoyed the concepts but felt unable to relate to any of the characters.

"The Man in the High Castle" is a story of alternative history following WW-II being won by Germany and Japan. It is filled with mystery, suspense and intrigue, and draws the reader to the ending. Other stories by the author, Philip K. Dick, were the basis of the Films "Blade Runner", "Total Recall" and "Minority Report". I'm looking forward to the Amazon video series based upon this story. http://www.theverge.com/2015/1/15/7553753/amazon-13-tv-pilots-released.

2nd reading:

Re-read with three seasons of the Amazon video series based upon this story under my belt. The series is a significant embellishment and somewhat divergence from the plot of the book, although anchored in the same "world reality". It was very interesting reading after watching the series. I got more from the book, and it made a lot more sense, even with the vast differences. I tired of the emphasis on the Oracle however. It is hard to believe that it could play such a widespread role in the culture.

3.5*, rounded down. I did not understand this novel, but that's not entirely the authors fault, and can probably more be attributed to my lack of intelligence (and inability to philosophically pontificate). Definitely needs a reread therefore, but was intriguing for sure in its speculation/ alternative history. Did lack much compelling characters/ plot though - not a single one really connected (and as per most 1960s novels written by men, the women were completely singular faced objects)
