THIS WAS A RIDE!!

So many people were kept in the dark throughout this book -pun intended- obviously Maggie: that tried to understand her childhood and why her parents were refusing to tell her why they left Baneberry Hall, but also many others (no spoilers though)

I love the way Riley sets you astray with new theories forming many times over. One of my theories were correct, but not a single other one was, which I like, I want to be proven wrong and surprised!!!

This book hade some similar elements to “the only one left”, one being the creepy house at the center of the story, but also the vintage machine (record player & typewriter). It didn’t feel like reusing the same concept out of convenience, I just think it’s part of Riley’s way of storytelling and masterfully setting the vibe.

Riley really has a way of making you FEEL the atmosphere of the houses in their books. So far I’ve read three and definitely plan on reading more!

⚠️Only read past this point if you’ve read the book!

I WAS RIGHT ABOUT MARTHAS PIE!!!! 🥧

But omg that was a ride!

Like did I understand that correctly???
Petras sister Hannah played tricks on Maggie. Since she had read the Book she knew what to do to replicate the “hauntings”

Maggie’s dad made the book up because they thought Maggie killed Petra - BUT AS IT TURNS OUT - Mrs.pennyface was Martha(!!!!!) that snuck into the house just to look at Maggie sleeping and the night they fled the house Petra babysat Maggie and discovered Martha in the act which lead to Petra falling down the stairs after she threatened to call the police.

LOVED her reasoning for starting fresh and not renovating to restore the past “Some houses don’t deserve to have their stories preserved”

Super twisty but I definitely still have some questions.

Well this book was a trip. I do love reading Riley Sager books. They pull you in in such a way that it almost feels like you're experiencing these things along with the characters and that's such a feat. And this book was no different. The moment that Maggie returns to Baneberry Hall, I was right there with her feeling confusion, fear, frustration... you name it.

This book was also interesting in that it had a book within a book. When Maggie was young, her family experienced something so terrible and her father went on to write a book about it. In between Maggie's adult chapters, we get chapters from her fathers book. Which is it's own story in a way since Maggie doesn't remember her time at Baneberry Hall. Which considering the trauma that she went through there seems a little odd to her.

Sager is a master at setting a scene. The ambiance and the pacing all mesh extremely well together to create this overall vibe that just had me hooked and kept me turning the pages way past my bedtime. This book also had an amazing creep factor. There's just something about haunted houses and when written correctly can just scare the bejesus out of you.

As we stay with adult Maggie in the house, we uncover more and more of what happened in the past and, of course, it's not what we expect. While I found some to be a little predictable. I was still shocked at the outcome. Sager continues to be one of my favorite horror writes and I'm enjoying making my way through his collection.

This was a real interesting read. I’m not one for mystery/suspense, but Riley Sager’s novels go beyond that realm.

In “Home Before Dark” Maggie re-visits her past at Baneberry Hall, the haunted home her family lasted only 20 days in.

This book had lots of great twists and turns, and it kept me hooked as each chapter flows between Maggie present day, and her fathers account 25-years back.
