Another great one from Riley Sager! Had some theories along the way and was proven wrong every time - his twists always get me! I also enjoyed the format of chapters alternating between Maggie's current day perspective and excerpts from 'the book'.
Edit: After reading a number of reviews on the book, I've noticed that a lot of people were disappointed thatthere wasn't actually any paranormal activity going on. I am not a huge paranormal fan so was pleasantly surprised to find that everything had a grounded reason (even if a bit unrealistic - but hey, it IS fiction..)

I loved the atmosphere and how everything was described definitely made me feel like I was watching a scary movie which I love. Maggie herself was a bit extra and often jumped to conclusions especially when it came to other people. The ending is what prevented this from being a five star as I feel Sager went out of his way to make this not a ghost story. So much so to the point that the explanations for the odd happenings were stranger to me than if it had just been a regular haunting. But I would definitely still recommend this for spooky season especially if you like a good mystery as there were a lot of things to figure out here and I still had a fun time reading.
Look. I am very aware that people have Opinions about Riley Sager, and say what you will you are free to think what you want, but when I’m in a reading slump after reading a book that’s absolutely devastatingly disappointing, all I have to do it pick up a Riley Sager, read it in one sitting, feel that final 10% whiplash through seven different twists, and babygirl is ready to read again.
Are these books perfect? Not by any stretch of the imagination, but I love them for what they are. This one was pleasantly surprising in that it did creep me out at some points and had me suspiciously checking the dark corner at the end of the hall that faces my reading spot and wondering if the shape there is a figure or just the pile of stuff waiting to go to the thrift store.
So thank you Riley Sager, for being the balm on my little wounded reader heart.
