I took 15 minutes to read this one shot and already knew the plot going in but it didn't make the story less impactful. When I was done reading I kept tearing up for the whole day just thinking about it. I think the story and art style really drives home so many complicated emotions of grief and loss that simply can't be conveyed with words. There's so much I want to say about this story but I don't know where to start. I need to go watch the movie or sit by the ocean for a while or something I'm so sad right now.

Man, I needed to sit on this book for a little while before coming back to talk about it. It's low-hanging fruit to say that Fujimoto is one of the best writers in manga right now. He's so adept at using unconventional storytelling tools to speak to the deepest parts of what it means to be human. He gets longing. He gets regret. He gets joy. He knows how to yank those feelings out of your chest and show them to you in a way that makes you understand them in a new light. As Dorothy Sayers would say, that is what art is.

So this time around, Fujimoto asks us to sit with the push and pull of excellence and joy: doing something because you love it or doing something because you're good at it. That'd be compelling enough on its own, but he weaves in more than that. In Look Back, Fujimoto asks us to see the choices we've made in our own lives that have led to irrevocable consequences. We're pulled to see how we've treated people as vehicles for our own dreams. Because he is who he is, he does this and more masterfully in under 200 illustrated pages.

For God's sake, read it.

Take it in. Walk in the rain like Fujino and do something that you love. Call an old friend to hear their voice. Look Back, damn it.

I got this after absolutely adoring the movie adaptation and, while it was still a really good read something just did emotionally hit me as hard as it did with the film.

I'm going to release a manga as a competitor to Shark Kick and name it Crymageddon.
