A great collection of journalism pieces that are engagingly written and researched to a comfortable degree. Always enjoy Grann’s writing.

I admire David Grann and the amount of hands on effort he clearly puts into all of his research. Journalists like him are truly amazing people. One of the central themes of this collection of stories was obsession and I mean this as a compliment, it’s a good theme for him. He doesn’t do anything halfway.
Some of these stories were really interesting: The water tunnels of NYC, “the chameleon”, Rickey Henderson. I would have loved a typical Grann book on those stories.
Some of the others just didn’t capture my attention like I’m used to. The last section in particular. Not into mob culture much, but that’s just my personal taste.
I do like the wide range of storytelling here. When it was good, it was really good.

Grann's writing is wonderful and he really brings us deep into strange situations (I am right now on the article about hunting for the elusive Giant Squid). I've read a few of these articles before in New Yorker, but I am happily re-reading them.

Not what I expected. Besides the first story, none were particularly Holmesian in nature.
