Noemí has to discover the secrets behind the family who married her cousin and what illness plagues her cousin. In this eerie novel there is a good build up of suspense and a satisfying ending

A pretty decent story but not GREAT for me. Took much too long to take off, the cousin was only actually seen a couple times even though she was the main reason for being there. The last few pages were packed full of a confusing conclusion. I actually almost quit this one a few times....

My reading for this book was quite slow going as I couldn't bring myself to listen to the audiobook much because I couldn't stand the narration. I felt it was more interesting and enjoyable when reading it in my own head's voice. Therefore, it took me way too long to get through this, and I wasn't consistent about reading. Overall, my impression of this book is that it was fine. I feel like there were some good and interesting aspects, but nothing quite blew me away. I'm happy to discuss it with someone who has already read it or is motivated to read it on their own, but I wouldn't necessarily push a recommendation trying to get others to read it. There are definitely some scenes that I did not enjoy, and while I can see an argument for them being good representations of some of the themes, I'm not sure if I feel they were necessary or worth it.

I’m not usually a horror fan, although I have studied classic Gothic Lit. This novel surprised me with how swiftly I was pulled in. I was so impressed by how the author weaves together complex issues of post-colonialism, eugenics, and gender into a fresh take on the Gothic genre. I truly couldn’t put it down—but that’s also because I needed to get to the end in hopes of preventing nightmares. Only knocked this to 4.5 rather than 5 because I was slightly unsatisfied with Francis’s arc.
