An absolutely amazing children’s books about two little gay penguins that end up hatching an egg together. I beautiful day to show different families and all around such a cute little book that made me cry a little.

I read this book as a part of my “Banned Book Series” where I’m challenging myself to read as many of the banned books in America as I can. And the fact that this book is banned in multiple states is so ridiculous it’s almost comical. This adorable children’s story is based on a TRUE story. And so if someone is triggered by some gay penguins then I think they qualify as a certified snowflake. One of the huge arguments against gay rights is that “it’s not natural. Animals in nature aren’t gay” scientifically it actually happens all the time. In fact many animals can change their gender/sex too. So when nature went against their agenda I guess they decided “we better ban this book so people don’t learn about how stupid we are” it’s far too late for that. Cute book. Cute gay penguins. Book bans are not cute. They are censorship and it’s also something the nazis did. Resist it and read as many banned books as you can!

In this true story, Roy and Silo are two male chinstrap penguins in the Central Park Zoo who don't quite fit in. They don't take any notice of the female penguins and instead form their own little family.
What an adorable little book! The illustrations by Henry Cole are charming. The story of Roy and Silo is sensitively written for the young ones. I was sad as they tried to nest and then uplifted when little Tango came along. All in the space of 30 or so pages. And I just love that the story is completely true.
Much as I wish this world were more accepting, this book is not going to be for all families. If your family can handle it, I do recommend the book. It's a good introduction for children to the concept of families that are a little different but that are still built on love.

Until today, I had never read or even heard of this book. I vaguely remember hearing about the "gay penguins" years ago, but I didn't know that there was a children's book written about them. I see why the certain whack jobs would want the book banned - all the more reason to make sure this book is available to all! I will be adding this to my bookshelf soon!!!
