I read this book for school when I was 15, and it resonated with me. I loved Cather's description of the plains, the scenery that seemed to send me back in time. For my second reading (this time for fun), I was once again enraptured with the wonderous description and life of the Divide. But on top of that, the characters! They each have some depth, and realness to them. And I somehow completely forgot the tragedy at the end. In high school I remember thinking I liked the book in spite of the fact that not much happened. And not a lot does happen in terms of "action"! I mean we basically stay on the Bergson land the whole novel, and the time jumps skip the development of the land. I really thought of the book as a beautiful scenescape more than a story. But "the action" is in the relationships between the characters as they grow and and the relationship the characters have with the land. I really enjoyed reading this book a second time. I feel I got so much more out of the characters. It was even more fun reading my old annotations from freshman year. Made me realize that I've grown a lot. Can't wait to read it again in the future!
