Admittedly, it took me far longer than I anticipated to read this book, but the fact that I stuck with it over that time and continued to come back even though it took me so long should be a testament to just how great this book is. Chabon creates a sprawling epic based around the lives of two characters that becomes a journey through the history of comics, World War II, and so much more. The breadth of the sprawling novel is only matched by its depth given to each individual character. I cannot remember the last time I read a 600+ page book and thought "I think I could read even more of this." (Never, that's never happened till now).

I really enjoyed this fictional but "true"account of the golden age of comics. This story deals with the consequences of loss and anger and revenge and love. It helps show the complexity of living a life when reality turns dark all around you. It shows the power that Comics and all the creative arts have to provide escape and therefore allow us to marshal our energy and face the world with its pain and sorrow.

This is a fantastic book for anybody interested in comics, jews, jews in comics, the politicizing of comics, how people were ripped off left and right in the creation of comics, or more.

Not to mention, how people react to sex, loss, homosexuality, Jews, war, and the ugly truth that you are, in fact, not a super hero -- you are not going to stop a bad man from hurting those you care about... and what people will do to make dreams reality.
