Even though a few too many topics and characters  were introduced near the end, I thought this book was good. The labor strike wasn’t dealt with well, but Onions managed to create characters with a lot of emotional and mental depth. This story was just made to be told in first person. I feel like you can catch glimpses of Onions’ own personal fears reflected within. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that the author is a talented writer. The plot was both wholly original and surprising. To be honest, the book felt a little longer than it is, but I enjoyed reading it and that’s what counts.

If I had to compare it to another, more well-known book, I would say it’s a bit like a more sinister and eerie version of The Secret Garden.
