This was not an easy book to read at first... I would recommend you read the postscript from UE before starting this book. I started reading this book as just another historical novel, but in reality it is an analysis of the life of a conspiracy and a collage of non-fiction elements... So it's basically a love child of Foucault's Pendulum and Hannah Arendt's Origins of Totalitarianism (Antisemitism section). Great read from Eco once again
Once again I couldn't finish an Umberto Ecco book. It started great but quickly got boring. Oh well, lesson learned.
It was a good exploration of historic events and a great examination of racist history and how some people craft conspiracies. A great companion to his essay Inventing the Enemy (Or it was a speech? I can't recall which) and a fun read.
Много хубава, интересна, забавна, сложна и важна книга, която разказва за много неща едновременно, основното от които - неимоверно силната роля на конспирациите и тоталните фалшификации като политически- и социалноопределящи фактори за повлияване върху реалността и историята. Ако кажа, че се говори за антисемитизма, ще е така, но и няма да е така, защото става дума и за още куп други интриги, вплетени в реални събития като Обединението на Италия например, но по прекрасен чисто художествен начин, заради което и нарекох книгата „идеален исторически роман“.
Личностите в него са реално съществували (почти всички), действията им също са такива, каквито ги познаваме от историята, а главният герой е съвкупна общност от хора, голям злодей и мръсник (той, както пише Еко, живее и днес). Романът е предизвикателство, има много имена и сюжети, но определено е внушителен и нестандартен (но май типично Умберто-Еков, доколкото мога да преценя). Освен това страшно обогатителен за общата, но и „по-частната“ култура. Много ми хареса, но в никой случай не бих го препоръчвала свободно.

Una testimonianza dell'influenza esercitata da falsi storici e quelle che oggi chiameremmo fake news sull'opinione pubblica e, soprattutto, della nascita dei Protocolli dei Savi di Sion, la massima espressione del complottismo al servizio dell'antisemitismo che ha ispirato, tra gli altri, Adolf Hitler.

This is a kind of book I can't afford to read over a period of time (for I might lose track of myraid charchters) and on other hand, it is hard to keep up with furious and almost byzantine twists without a breather. Umberto Eco in his signature style describes the 19th century anti-semitic moment and how the hoax of the "Protocols of the Elders of the Zion" is perpetuated. For history/historical fiction lovers, this book is a real feast.
As is so often the case, fact is stranger than fiction.
