Hilarious until the end when the body count goes up. Surprising ending too. Their adventures through Chinatown reminded me of the 1986 movie "Big Trouble in Little China" with Kurt Russell and his friend trying to find an elusive woman. Always great lines ("we always thought cowboying was tough, but it turned out birdboying wasn't any easier." and the chapters with the great subtitles give you many a chuckle too.

Big and Old Red are in San Francisco. After unsuccessfully trying to get a job at the Pinkerton Detective Agency, they come Dr. Chan and then Diana C. (both from the railroad in the previous book). Someone ends up dead, by what the police call suicide and by what Old Red deducifies is murder. Big Red and Old Red romp through Chinatown in an effort to solve the murder, and come across opium dens, mafia, and prostitution. It took me longer to get involved in this book than the previous novels, but in the end, it was an enjoyable listen.

Audiobook was not the best format for the Amlingmeyer brothers, and while I enjoyed the new setting the mystery was more confusing.

I didn't enjoy The Black Dove as much as I enjoyed the other books in the series, but it is still a worthwhile read that further develops the characters. Great ending as well.
