That was surprisingly good. I say ‘surprisingly’ because I expected it to be entertaining - funny, and interesting enough. I didn’t expect it to be well-written, thought- provoking, and touching. It spoke very solidly to me, as I am also mixed race (British and Filipina-Chinese), and moved from Asia to rural England as a child, so a history remarkably similar to the author’s. As such, his reflections were deeply moving and in some cases provoked some real reflection on the British Asian experience. That said, I wouldn’t recommend reading this for a solid grounding in history, philosophy or critical thinking; at the end of the day, he’s a comedian. He has an eye for the absurd, and can tell great stories. In summery, I thought this was a remarkable success. Almost as good as the only other comedian’s memoir I really rate, which was How not to be a Boy by Robert Webb, which was excellent.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!
I bought it when I was in KL, visiting Malaysia for the first time with my boyfriend, who is of Malaysian Chinese decent.
For this reason, the book felt very personal and relatable because Phil speaks about British and Malaysian customs with such affection and understanding.
I want everyone in my life to read it!!!!
