I have mixed feelings on this one. I'm not a big serial killer fan, but I would recommend for people who were and liked light romance books. I liked the characters and the idea but the writing style let me down. I listened to this on audio book and I felt like the characters often had boring, robotic conversations and the plot moved really slow. And yet, I read the whole thing. So 3 or 3.5*

First time I’ve read a Nora Roberts thriller - I’ve read plenty of JD Robb books - and in Identity I got what I expected - a thriller with romance thrown in. Morgan Albright - building a life in Baltimore, works two jobs - owns a home - rents out a room to a friend. Life is good - until Nina is murdered - and the FBI comes to tell Morgan that she was the intended victim. The killer was a guy posing as an itinerant tech consultant in town for a few months. He stole Morgan’s identity - took out loans and ran up credit card debt in her name - and then killed her friend instead of her.
Morgan moves to Vermont to live with her mother and grandmother - gets a job managing a bar at a family owned resort - falls in love with one of the sons - gets updates from the FBI on the guy who killed Nina. The FBI is tracking him - and he is becoming unraveled - obsessed with getting his revenge on Morgan for not letting him kill her.
The story line moves nicely - fairly easy to skip the gushy parts - and the ending was a bit “tame” for me - although I personally could not have built more tension into the ending.

I picked up this book second hand because I had never read a Nora Robert’s book and I was curious to see if I would like her books since she obviously a very successful and long-running author.

Since this was my first Nora Robert’s book, I can’t say much yet about whether I would like her because this book was fine. I didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it. I do think this book could have been cut down by 100 pages. She tends to focus on lots of dialogue and lots of detail. This story was a little too detailed for me. We went on whole side tangents with the characters that weren’t really necessary, which is maybe her thing? More character focused stories? Not sure. Or maybe that’s just been her writing style for a long time and I’m not used to it.

I would give her books another shot in the future. Maybe this book was just a so-so book for her. She also apparently writes under “JD Robb” so maybe I should try one from that series.

3 stars.

Nora’s consistent fatphobia in her novels is really a put off.

I usually enjoy Nora Roberts because she is really good at creating likable characters and weaving interesting stories. This book was no exception. I really enjoyed all of the characters in this book, even the psychopath.

Morgan is likable right from the start, but even she grows and evolves as the story builds, taking what the psychopath does to her and making her life better. I enjoyed the dynamic between Morgan, her Mom, and Grandmother. This is what Roberts does so well — she creates her characters so flawlessly that you can easy visualize all of them.

It was a little obvious from the start that she and Miles would get together, but I really enjoyed their story. If I were being picky, I would deduct a 1/2 star for how she finally had them hook up. It might have made the story a little longer, but I think the author could have created a better scenario. That’s the one part that felt out of place and lazy.

The back and forth between Morgan’s life and Gavin’s life was interesting and at times amusing. This made the thriller a little more light, which readers like me (who don’t enjoy gore and murder) can appreciate. Roberts managed to write an interesting thriller without making me have bad dreams, which I thoroughly appreciate.

I liked the ending. While it was a little predictable, it still was enjoyable to watch it play out. I loved all of the characters, the story idea, the romance part, and almost everything about this book. A
