Most of the stories were very mediocre, and often samey. I didn’t like the writing style at all. The only story that I quite liked was Princes because of the sibling focus.

[review written 2011]

Today my book was How They Met and Other Stories by David Levithan. I’ve been a fan of Levithan’s work for a while–he’s a great writer–and I felt like re-reading this book again, a collection of short stories.

Most of them were fantastic. Some were, of course, better than others. I think my favorite had to be the first one, Starbucks Boy, though I may be influenced by the love story of my favorite couple ever (Kurt and Blaine from Glee). I also liked the one where Rory and Roger met on the airplane. The last few stories weren’t all that great in my opinion.

I’ve read this book once before, but I love and appreciate it for its variety of stories across cultures, genders and places. It’s one of the books that show that love can happen anytime, anywhere.

i should start by saying i'm not the type to sit down and read a bunch of love stories, that i've never before and sat down to read anything billed as such, let alone those intended for YA. but seriously, i laughed, i cried (i cried mostly because i thought about how i cried while listening to a song jestodd is playing at her wedding while reading these stories, but still, tears). the one about the airplane couple is my favorite.

I'm finding it hard to rate this book because it is made up of so many separate stories. I want to rate Starbucks Boy a 5, How They Met a 4, Miss Lucy had a Steamboat a 2, and Good Witch a very indecisive 3. I love anything David Levithan writes, but some of these were good and some were great and some were phenomenal. I'm glad Starbucks Boy was first, because it caught my attention immediately. I loved every second of it. I read it while sitting uncomfortably on the floor of the train station and I kept turning to my friends to tell them what was happening or to read a line aloud or to express my wish to meet this amazing child with perfect gaydar. I loved it. And I liked reading How They Met and Intersection late at night when I was comfortable and relaxed.

Every story is different and every story reached me in a different way. And I rather enjoyed it all.

Levithan does it again! In this collection of short stories, Levithan writes about various couples in their own unique relationships. Sometimes the focus is on how they met and the romance around it, but sometimes the focus is on how the relationship dissolved and how they are moving on. Couples range from anywhere on the sexuality spectrum and I really love how Levithan doesn't tell the gender of the people right away in the stories. He gives some room for interpretation here and it's beautiful. Stories range from poignant to fuzzy to heartbreaking to beautiful.
