I really enjoyed this book. I loved the duology as a whole but oh my gosh, it made me sad! Definitely worth the read though!

“People were messy. They were defined not only by what they’d done, but by what they would have done, under different circumstances, molded as much by their regrets as their actions, choices they stood by and those they wished they could undo.”

Whew that ending. This book had me at the end man. I was completely enthralled. The beginning was slow for me. I wanted to put it down but there was something about Kate hunting monsters and the change that takes place in August that spurred me forward. I wanted to see the reunion. I wanted to see how August was settling into his new role and how he comes to reconcile his actions and his duty. I wanted to see Kate kick some monster ass !

I’m happy and I’m not. The ending leaves me in a difficult place, but I like the message it gives. Life is not a fairytale and things don’t always end happily ever after. So where do we find hope? In the things we are willing to face the pain for.

So, I can't say I'm disappointed because I wasn't feeling this book from page 1. However, I am a stubborn human being (unfortunately) and decided to push through, even though I was struggling. Was it worth it? No, but I've finished the series so yay?
To be short and sweet: the ending, the plot, the random new monster that was so unnecessary and random, and the semi-romance - not for me. I understand the appeal of it, but I just did not enjoy.

There was a strange place, between knowing and not knowing. A place where things could live in the back of your head without weighing down on your heart.

Why do you do this to me, Victoria Schwab?

The Writing and Worldbuilding

I loved that we got to see outside of Verity, and I hope that if we ever get more in this world—P L E A S E—that we'll get to see even more.

The plot was awesome, almost better than This Savage Song, and I was totally invested throughout. Unfortunately, the emotional parts just didn't hit me nearly as hard as they did in the first book, though not for lack of trying.

I absolutely loved the addition of the Chaos Eater. It really upped the stakes and expanded the world.

I also loved the little poetic interludes in the perspective of the Chaos Eater. Those were super cool and unique.

The Characters

August: It's no surprise that I love August and will always love August. I really appreciated how his character changed and grew in this, becoming more mature, but also more tortured in a non-angsty teen kind of way. Also, I guess he does have a sex drive *wiggles eyebrows up and down and bites lip*

Kate (and sort of Alice): Kate was great in this too, and I loved her arc and final stand with Alice, her Malchai doppelganger, who was an excellent addition.

Sloan: Good ole Sloan, being creepy and obsessive. Honestly, I didn't really care much for him last book, but he really stood out in this one.

Soro: I didn't really care much for them tbh though I appreciated that Sunai can be non-gender-specific.

Conclusion

I seriously loved this, and Schwab has once again cemented herself as my queen and goddess. If you haven't read this one yet, D O I T!

I loved this series. The concept was amazing and starkingly different from what I have read before. Looking at the synopsis at the end of both the books, one can easily think that this is a story about two characters who come to join hands for some great purpose. But the story is much more that these two characters. There was a hint of romance, but it never let us stray from the main storyline.

A lot of the storyline hinges on music and it was such a joy to read such a story which displayed the calming and soothing effects of music in such a cautious, yet beautiful way.

So good. It had times where it dragged for me but ultimately the ending was quite satisfying. I expected the chaos eater to be what remains of Leo and or for Kate’s new friends to come to the rescue, but instead it was just what made sense for the book.
