not for me - the language was tough to understand, and although I only read the first few chapters, it was a little too sexual for my taste.

I don’t think this is bad. I’m just having a hard time following the audio book. I think I’m gonna pick up the physical copy and read it that way. There’s just a lot of jumping around in the beginning and it’s hard for me to read these kind of books on audio.

I got to page 100 and dudes are still, um, spilling on everything that moves.
There is something of value here about identity and sexuality that reminds me of the movie Moonlight. But where Moonlight is gentle and delicate, this is lewd and mean. I am noping out of this book. Too bad, it has a map.

DNF, I was unsettled with how they describe women. It was off putting.

I guess this book has a stylishness, but that style is not for me. Finished it for the kernel of a good story I was able to cull from the 600 pages, but it was a slog. For every lucid, readable passage there were about six distasteful ones filled with violence, sex, and portraits of repulsive characters. Add to that the long, drawn-out descriptions of settings that sounded like nothing more than set design for an eventual movie and I found that just when I'd start to get into the story, it would bog down again. Notable: there was one chapter that was nothing but some sort of song/poem that (maybe?) was describing what had come before (skipped it, since it made no sense to me) and another torture/drug scene that consisted of a single run-on sentence more than two pages long.

Fascinating. But...difficult. This is not Game of Thrones - so if that's all that's drawing you to this book - don't. It's a literary feat - a beautiful web of stories and myth that gets lost sometimes in stream of consciousness (although I have to say the author is pretty good at figuring out when he's possibly lost you in the plot vs. high art and gives you a little summary of what the heck just happened). Ultimately I'm glad I read it - and I think intrigued about where it goes next. But give yourself lots of time with this one and if you make it through the first part, stick with it (and try to remember what happens as you work your way through the slow burn of the middle section) - it's by no means a quick read and it's also one you have to flip back and forth through a lot (so not ideal on an e-reader)

This book has super masculine energy. Just not the right time to get into it. Will come back to it, because it was intriguing, just didn’t love within the first 50 pages how women were written/spoken about
