While not blessed by the minimal high contrast visual style of Mike Mignola, the story and climactic events chronicled in this volume make it surely a masterpiece within the Hellboy narrative.

A great conclusion to a tangled web of storylines to be sure. I really loved this whole series and the directions Mignola kept taking the readers. Highly recommend!

Even when I don't exactly know what's happening, Hellboy is rad. He's a rad character with rad sidekicks who are rad in their own right. The actual series of Hellboy has become increasingly about Hellboy's place in the world and the apocalypse-bringer's ability to deal with that fact. In this volume, the apocalypse's reckoning finally does come upon the world. It's not what I thought it would be, but, hell, with Hellboy, what do you ever know about the next gnarly piece of gnarly? The B.P.R.D. series now takes up the interests of all the Hellboy characters without Hellboy. As for this line of story, Hellboy just wants to be a happy, good-living man. Why do all the demons, devils, gods and forces of darkness all want him to be the death of everything? Dude's got it rough in a big way. :(

Wow. Yes. This is fitting. The Hellboy-universe pulls no punches, plays for serious stakes. The years have been worth it.

If I could give this book higher than a five I would.
This is like, the ultimate culmination of everything we've seen set up in the Hellboy series so far and it's literally earth shaking.
I've read this volume at least 2 times before and it really does get to you. The art is outstanding and a lot of the dialogue (especially from the Dragon) kind of punch at you.
I need to read the BPRD story that follows alongside this, because humanity gets it rough and I want to see Ragna Rok from their perspective.
My only real complaint is the romancey character who's hanging out with Hellboy, I get their history and why she's important to the plot currently, but I think they could have EASILY avoided setting them up, even if it is just a kiss.
So I guess that's the only reason I'm not writing in the review that this gets more than 5 stars lol

Also, very satisfying to hear Morgan Le Fay say that Gruagach is her favourite character too.

This was definitely one of my favorite volumes of Hellboy. It harkens back to the other issues and leaves you with some feels at the end.

I think every volume of this entire series was remarkable. Nothing really stood out to me more than the Wild Hunt which I'd probably give a 4.5 but I loved every volume.

I gave almost every volume 3 stars because I guess my appreciation for this series grew over time. I'm usually a love it or hate it kinda guy but this is the first series that I can honestly say grew on me. Reading Mignola's little foreword for each issue was intriguing, learning about the different mythologies and folk tales he researched. Hellboys random adventures were always fun. The stories have episodic elements but also have this overarching Lovecraftian thread winding its way in and out of the story which kind of put me off in the first two volumes but like I said, it grew on me. Hellboy is a fantastic character, so entirely the master of his own fate. I don't think I've seen or read any other character like him.

The art, much the like the character, is wonderfully unique when Mignola is the one drawing. When its not Mignola, its still amazing.

Recommended if you like Mignola style art, stoic characters, mythology, magic, folk tales, horror, and Lovecraftian style stories.
